Open Access•Yeeun Lee, Gu Li et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2026

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effects of an act of kindness intervention on increasing daily social contact and reducing loneliness among community adults experiencing loneliness. It also explores heterogeneity in effects and potential moderators, including individual differences in baseline social health and intervention implementation. Open Access•Feng Guo, Fengbo GUO et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2025

Individuals with psychopathic traits exhibit a range of maladaptive manifestations, including self-centeredness, interpersonal manipulation, and decline to cooperate. Such individuals may have an antagonistic relationship with trust, which may, in turn, affect their behavioral choices. However, it remains unclear how individuals with psychopathic traits make decisions about trusting strangers. To address this gap, 44 healthy participants were sel…

Open Access•Wang Ivy Wong, Sylvia Yun Shi et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2025•References: 56

Gender-typed play may contribute to gender disparities in spatial skills, but evidence of this link is limited. Gender-typed play and mental transformation, an important spatial skill, were studied using age-appropriate and comprehensive measures. Chinese children were tested at 5–6 years and at 11–14 years (N = 210), creating a long-term data set considering bidirectional associations. Play and mental transformation showed moderate to large gend…

  • Predictors and Mental Health Benefits of Chosen Name Use Among Transgender Youth

    Open Access•A M Pollitt, Salvatore Ioverno et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 41

Chosen name use among transgender youth (youth whose gender identities are different from their sex assigned at birth) can be part of the complex process of aligning gender presentation with gender identity and can promote mental health. However, little is known about the factors that predict whether or not transgender youth have a chosen name and outcomes of chosen name use, especially in specific social contexts. We examined, among a sample of …

  • Investigating site-level longitudinal effects of population health interventions: Gay-Straight Alliances and school safety

    Open Access•Gu Li, Amery D Wu et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2019

There is limited research on evaluating nonrandomized population health interventions. We aimed to introduce a new approach for assessing site-level longitudinal effects of population health interventions (SLEPHI) by innovatively applying multiple group multilevel (MG-ML) modeling to repeated cycles of cross-sectional data collected from different individuals of the same sites at different times, a design commonly employed in public health resear…

  • Sexual Experimentation in Heterosexual, Bisexual, Lesbian/Gay, and Questioning Adolescents From Ages 11 to 15

    Open Access•Gu Li, Jac T M Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 10

To examine adolescent sexuality development, we analyzed data from a British cohort study (N = 5,070), which assessed the same 12-14 sexual activities at ages 11, 12, 13, and 15, and sexual orientation identity at age 15. The sexual activities ranged from low (e.g., cuddling), moderate (e.g., kissing), to high (e.g., sexual intercourse) intensity. We found that most adolescents having sexual activities of low-to-moderate intensity with same-sex i…

    Open Access•Karson T F Kung, Gu Li et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 49

Gender differences in play behavior and physical aggression have been consistently reported. Theoretical perspectives concerning evolutionary, social, and social-cognitive mechanisms suggest that male-typical play behavior during childhood increases subsequent physical aggression. The evidence supporting these connections is limited, however. The present study investigated the association between gender-typed play behavior in early childhood and …

  • Childhood gender-typed behavior and adolescent sexual orientation: A longitudinal population-based study

    Gu Li, Karson T F Kung et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2017•Cited by: 39•References: 4

Lesbian and gay individuals have been reported to show more interest in other-sex, and/or less interest in same-sex, toys, playmates, and activities in childhood than heterosexual counterparts. Yet, most of the relevant evidence comes from retrospective studies or from prospective studies of clinically referred, extremely gender nonconforming children. In addition, findings are mixed regarding the relation between childhood gender-typed behavior …

Sex-typed behavior in childhood is significantly related to sexual orientation in adulthood. In addition, same-sex attractions in early adolescence are more non-exclusive than in adulthood and can differ from later same-sex orientations. However, little research has focused on romantic attractions as they emerge during early adolescence. Drawing a sample from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (197 girls, 204 boys), the current s…
