  • From achievement motivation to anxiety

Open Access•Guixia Wang, Youyan Nie et al.•ARTICLE•Learning and Instruction•2026

  • Individual differences in beliefs about gesture perception and production

Heng Zhang, Amelia Yeo et al.•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2025

Gestures are one of the most common forms of nonverbal communication in everyday life and work. While specific gestures have been well-studied, the role of general gestures in computer-mediated communication remains largely unknown, especially regarding individual differences in gesture production and perception. Utilizing the limited capacity model of motivated mediated message processing as the theoretical framework, this study explores the imp…

  • Exploring Associations of Positive Relationships and Adolescent Well-Being Across Cultures

    Open Access•Kah Loong Chue, Amelia Yeo•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 49

A recurrent dimension occurring in wellbeing models pertains to positive relationships of individuals. Yet there is little information elucidating the link between positive relationships and subjective wellbeing in different cultures. Thus, the aims of this paper were (1) to examine whether there is an association between positive relationships and adolescent wellbeing across several culturally distinct countries and (2) explore whether the assoc…

  • Teachers’ attitudes about gesture for learning and instruction

    Open Access•Mitchell J Nathan, Amelia Yeo et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2019•References: 11

We developed and tested a survey instrument to measure teachers’ attitudes about gesture in learning and instruction (TAGLI). Teachers ( N = 192) generally believed that instructional gestures are beneficial for learning, and not distracting for students. Teachers had positive expectations, both for gestures that are redundant with (i.e., match) the accompanying speech, and gestures that are complementary to (i.e., mismatch) speech. However, teac…

  • Students learn more when their teacher has learned to gesture effectively

    Martha W Alibali, Andrew G Young et al.•ARTICLE•Gesture•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 3

Teachers’ gestures are an integral part of their instructional communication. In this study, we provided a teacher with a tutorial about ways to use gesture in connecting ideas in mathematics instruction, and we asked the teacher to teach sample lessons about slope and intercept before and after this tutorial. In response to the tutorial, the teacher enhanced his communication about links between ideas by increasing the frequency with which he ex…
