The Problem of Negative Reliabilities
Negative coefficients of reliability, sometimes returned by the standard formulae for estimation of the internal-consistency reliability, are neither theoretically nor numerically correct. Alternate strategies for test development in this special case are suggested
A Causal Model of Mathematics Performance in Early Adolescence
Using path analysis, the present investigation was done to clarify possible causal linkages among general scholastic aptitude, academic achievement in mathematics, self-concept of ability, and performance on a mathematics examination. Subjects were 122 eighth-grade students who completed a mathematics examination as well as a measure of self-concept of ability. Aptitude and achievement measures were obtained from school records. Analysis showed s…
The Relationship between Correlational and Internal Consistency Notions of Test Reliability
The Spearman-Brown formula for correction of the split-half coefficient of reliability was discussed as a conceptual precursor of modern formulations of internal-consistency reliability. An alternative expression of the Spearman-Brown formula was suggested. Derived from the principal components of the product moment coefficient of correlation, this formulation facilitates understanding of the meaning of internal-consistency reliability. It also i…
Predicting Students' Emotional Empathy
Differences between Education and Business Students in Cooperative and Competitive Attitudes, Emotional Empathy, and Self-Esteem
To compare undergraduate men and women enrolled in education and business classes regarding cooperative attitude, competitive attitude, emotional empathy, and self-esteem, four paper-and-pencil measures were administered. The 126 students in education scored higher on cooperative attitude and emotional empathy, while the 109 students in business scored higher on competitive attitude and self-esteem. Women scored higher than men on cooperative att…
The Factorial Validity of Student Ratings in Faculty Promotions
The Berkeley student evaluation questionnaire by Hildebrand, Wilson, and Dienst was modified to reflect the Whitely-Doyle factorial structure of implicit theories students hold about teaching characteristics of their instructors. Evidence of factorial validity with respect to hierarchial order of faculty academic ranks was found for factors pertaining to the knowledge of the subject matter and expositional skills. With respect to these factors, s…
