Effectiveness of a virtual patient simulation training on improving provider engagement in suicide safer care
A Call to Prioritize Integrated Suicide Interventions in Adolescent Substance Use Treatment
Substance use is identified as a risk factor for suicidal thoughts and behaviors among adolescents. Scholars have developed and investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of combined suicide and substance use interventions for adolescents psychiatrically hospitalized following a suicidal crisis who also have co-occurring substance use problems. However, little research has been done to develop and investigate the effectiveness…
In the Moment I Wanted to Kill Myself, and Then After I Didn't
Research on planning, method choice, and method substitution in adolescents' suicide attempts is limited. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 adolescents following their suicide attempt to learn the extent to which the attempt was planned, why they used the method they did, and whether they would have substituted another method if the one they used had been unavailable. Applied Thematic Analysis was used to identify codes and develop themes.…
Substance use among transgender and cisgender high school students
Using data from a regional census survey of high school students, we compared substance use patterns between transgender and cisgender students, and students who did not know if they are transgender (DKT). Data from more than 23,000 youth from 26 high schools were used to compare alcohol-related behaviors, marijuana use, and non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) between these three groups. We also examined differences in substance use beh…
MSW Students’ Use of SBIRT
Increased visibility of substance use as a public health concern has prompted Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training initiatives; however, barriers to SBIRT use in social work practice remain. We aimed to identify factors differentiating MSW students who used SBIRT in practice from those who did not. Independent-samples t tests compared attitudes and beliefs of students who did and did not use SBIRT. Significant…
Adolescent Alcohol Use
Study findings extend current knowledge about the interactive effects of parental supervision and peer influence on the drinking patterns of adolescents. Results underscore the importance of addressing both parental monitoring and peer influence in interventions that target adolescent alcohol use, recognizing peer factors as a potential mechanism of the effect that parental monitoring has on adolescent drinking
Evaluation of Alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training for Social Workers
Social work education is well positioned for workforce development initiatives that prepare practitioners to use Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) with people at risk for alcohol use disorders. This article presents preliminary process and outcome evaluation data from the first year of a three-year grant which suggests that the training is acceptable and results in significant changes in trainees’ knowledge, attitud…
Social Work's Ethical Responsibility to Train MSW Students to Work with Suicidal Clients
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of suicide in this country has reached a 30-year high (Curtin, Warner, & Hedegaard, 2016). After a period of nearly consistent decline between 1986 and 1999, the overall age-adjusted suicide rate rose 24 percent from 1999 to 2014, and for some demographic groups increased up to 89 percent (Curtin et al., 2016). This trend is especially alarming in light of the fact t…
Interactive Effect of Child Maltreatment and Substance Use on Depressed Mood Among Adolescents Presenting to Community-Based Substance Use Treatment
