  • Gun Violence Exposure and the Perceived Need to Carry a Firearm

Open Access•Stephen N Oliphant, Shaun Bhatia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2026

Gun violence exposure (GVE) is associated with adverse mental health outcomes and firearm carrying. The extent to which community-led programs aimed at reducing violence counteract these effects is unknown. This study sought to examine (1) the relationships between GVE, anticipated risk of assault, psychological distress, and the perceived need to carry a firearm for protection and (2) whether awareness of community violence intervention (CVI) ef…

  • Drunk and dangerous? Exploring the tenuous links among drunk driving, alcohol arrests, and firearm violence in an urban context

Open Access•Chris Melde, Giovanni Circo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice•2025•References: 1

  • State efforts to enforce firearm dispossession through relinquishment laws

    Open Access•Stephen N Oliphant, April M Zeoli•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Our analysis revealed that many states still lack statutory elements that are expected to increase the likelihood of firearm dispossession, such as requiring the court to order relinquishment, strict standards for providing proof of firearm transfer or some form of compliance verification, and provisions that authorize law enforcement to recover unrelinquished firearms. The absence of such elements may facilitate unlawful firearm retention by tho…

  • Firearm Purchaser Licensing Laws and Firearm Deaths Among Adolescents and Emerging Adults

    Open Access•Cassandra K Crifasi, Rachel J Topazian et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 25

Research on firearm purchaser licensing laws has found population level reductions in firearm-related mortality. Limited research has been conducted specifically examining the impact of these laws among adolescents and emerging adults. We obtained death data from the National Center for Health Statistics from 1990 to 2019. We generated state-year rates of homicide and suicide, stratified by firearm involvement, for decedents aged 15 to 24. We str…

  • Bullying Victimization and Weapon Carrying

    Open Access•Stephen N Oliphant•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 57

Much of the existing research on adolescent firearm and weapon carrying lacks a theoretical framework. Relatedly, few studies have examined the relationship between weapon carrying and bullying victimization experienced at school, which has been established as a key strain in adolescence. The present study seeks to provide a partial test of general strain theory as a theoretical framework to explain adolescent weapon carrying. Using a large U.S. …

  • Estimating the effect of death penalty moratoriums on homicide rates using the synthetic control method

    Open Access•Stephen N Oliphant•ARTICLE•Criminology & Public Policy•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Research Summary Research examining death penalty deterrence has been characterized as inconclusive and uninformative. The present analysis heeds a recommendation from prior research to examine single‐state changes in death penalty policy using the synthetic control method. Data from the years 1979–2019 were used to construct synthetic controls and estimate the effects of death penalty moratoriums on homicide rates in Illinois, New Jersey, Washin…
