Assessing Fit and Dimensionality in Least Squares Metric Multidimensional Scaling Using Akaike’s Information Criterion
Akaike’s information criterion is suggested as a tool for evaluating fit and dimensionality in metric multidimensional scaling that uses least squares methods of estimation. This criterion combines the least squares loss function with the number of estimated parameters. Numerical examples are presented. The results from analyses of both simulation data and real data demonstrate the utility of the Akaike’s information criterion in identifying the …
Do Mathematical Gender Differences Continue? A Longitudinal Study of Gender Difference and Excellence in Mathematics Performance in the U.S
A persistent belief in American culture is that males both outperform and have a higher inherent aptitude for mathematics than females. Using data from two school districts in two different states in the United States, this study used longitudinal multilevel modeling to examine whether overall performance on standardized as well as classroom tests reveals a gender difference in mathematics performance. The results suggest that both male and femal…
Correlates of Gun Involvement and Aggressiveness among Adolescents
This study examined adolescents' aggressiveness in relation to their experiences, beliefs, and attitudes concerning gun use. It also investigated family composition, relationships with parents, and emotionality as correlates of gun involvement and aggressiveness. A self-report questionnaire was given to 334 students, 167 females and 167 males, in a junior high school in upstate New York. Correlation coefficients and regression analyses revealed t…
