  • The Fulfillment of Parties’ Election Pledges: A Comparative Study on the Impact of Power Sharing

Open Access•Rob Thomson, Robert Thomson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2017•Cited by: 202•References: 36

Why are some parties more likely than others to keep the promises they made during previous election campaigns? This study provides the first large‐scale comparative analysis of pledge fulfillment with common definitions. We study the fulfillment of over 20,000 pledges made in 57 election campaigns in 12 countries, and our findings challenge the common view of parties as promise breakers. Many parties that enter government executives are highly l…

  • Is ‘Clarity of Responsibility’ Important for Economic Voting? Revisiting Powell and Whitten's Hypothesis

Open Access•Terry J Royed, Terry Royed et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•2000•Cited by: 44

In the words of Martin Paldam, comparative economic voting studies suffer from a 'great instability' – i.e., economic effects appear in some countries at some times, but not others, and tend to be weak and inconsistent across studies. Powell and Whitten propose a possible solution to the 'instability' of cross-national voting studies: 'to explain differences in retrospective economic voting across nations and over time we must take account of the…

  • Parties and Economic Policy in the USA: Pledges and Performance, 1976-1992

    Open Access•Terry J Royed, Terry Royed et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•1999•Cited by: 6•References: 6

The ability of parties to carry out campaign pledges is a central theme of democratic theory. While many scholars have viewed US parties as weak and ineffective, recent studies have suggested that the US system is surprisingly effective. We suggest that previous studies have not presented a clear picture of the relative success of each party under a variety of circumstances - i.e. `who gets what, when?'. We investigate each party's success in eco…

  • The Politics and economics of revenue growth: A cross–national analysis

    Open Access•Terry J Royed, Terry Royed et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Despite considerable interest in comparative fiscal policy in general, and the high salience of tax policy and tax reform in the industrialized democracies, there are relatively few cross–national studies of the economic and political correlates of revenues over time. We undertake a cross–national time series study of revenue growth in fourteen OECD countries between 1958 and 1990.We test a number of political and economic hypotheses about revenu…

  • Political Parties and Public Policy: Social Welfare Policy from Carter to Bush

Terry J Royed, Terry Royed et al.•ARTICLE•Polity•1997•Cited by: 10

Recent studies have concluded that the U.S. system of separation of powers is surprisingly effective in producing legislation, even under conditions of divided government. This article goes beyond the question of how much legislation is produced, and evaluates the two major parties' success at fulfilling their platform pledges on social welfare policy between 1977 and 1992. An analysis of 287 pledges confirms that most pledges are fulfilled, even…

  • Testing the Mandate Model in Britain and the United States: Evidence from the Reagan and Thatcher Eras

    Open Access•Terry J Royed, Terry Royed•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•1996•Cited by: 127•References: 14

The hypothesis that parties are better able to carry out mandates in Britain than the United States is tested for the Reagan and Thatcher years. A list of specific pledges was compiled and it was determined whether or not the pledges were fulfilled. The primary finding is that more Conservative party pledges were fulfilled, compared to those of the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States. In each country policy took a conservative …

  • Government ‘strength’ and budget deficits in advanced democracies

    Open Access•Stephen A Borrelli, Terry J Royed et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1995•Cited by: 32•References: 14

Roubini and Sachs provided the first systematic test of the idea that political structure the size, composition, diversity, and/or stability of a governing cabinet ‐ is related to budget deficits. In this paper, we take issue with several of Roubini and Sachs' choices concerning data and operationalization, and argue that their approach cannot offer clear conclusions about the relationship between national political structure and budget deficits.…
