Operationalizing Co-Design in Exercise Interventions with Indigenous Peoples in Australia: Development and Cultural Adaptation of the PrIDE Tools
Indigenous Australians experience a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. While clinician-led, community-based exercise programs are effective in general populations, limited peer-reviewed evidence is available describing culturally adapted exercise interventions with Indigenous Australians that transparently reports governance, cultural adaptation, and theoretical design. This paper reports the co-design…
Humanitarian Narrative: Bodies and Detail in Late-Victorian Social Work
How should we interpret the humanitarian narratives of early social work? This article suggests that we explore the ways in which bodies and detail were used to establish the grounds for humanitarian action in the late-Victorian period. Drawing on case material from a child welfare organization in Manchester and Salford, it explores how the ‘filthy body’ of the child and the failings of ‘worthless’ parents were used to justify interventions to ‘r…

A Catholic Modernity?
This chapter presents the transcript of Charles Taylor's lecture, given at the University of Dayton on the occasion of the presentation of the Marianist Award on January 25, 1996. Taylor's lecture not only raises some questions about modernity and Catholicism, but also provides a characteristically thoughtful description and evaluation of immensely complex historical, cultural, and religious developments that span the last several hundred years.
A Catholic modernity: Charles Taylor's Marianist Award lecture, with responses by William M. Shea, Rosemary Luling Haughton, George Marsden, Jean Bethke Elshtain
This book offers a series of reflections on the state of Christianity, and especially Catholicism, in the world today. The centrepiece of the volume is a lecture by the renowned philosopher Charles Taylor, from which the title of the book is taken. The lecture, delivered at Dayton University in January of 1996, offered Taylor the opportunity to speak about his theological views and his sense of the cultural placement of Catholicism, its history a…

Can liberalism be communitarian
In Liberalism, Community and Culture, Will Kymlicka suggests that the cultural resources with which communitarians have been concerned, inasmuch as they are prerequisites for the individual choice of the good, are appropriate objects of liberal protection. But Kymlicka's liberalism fails to fully meet the concerns of those who see their communities as intrinsically valuable—not merely as necessary means for the clarification of their options. Ult…

What’s Wrong with Capitalism
Charles Taylor tackles the problem of the false priorities of capitalism, particularly in the welfare sector, and asks the fundamental question: are these false priorities structural or marginal to capitalism
