Black Women’s Commemorative Recovery: Strategic Ambiguity as a Rhetorical Resource in The Embrace
When The Embrace, a monument to Martin and Coretta King, was unveiled in Boston in 2023, it drew mixed reactions from various quarters of the public. Some observers praised the statue for its representation of the Kings as a couple and praised the universal themes of love and unity they read into it, while others criticized its disembodied presentation and suggested it was not an appropriate commemoration of the work performed by such venerated f…
Reactive Memories of 1776
In this article, we situate the riot at the United States Capitol building on January 6, 2021, within the longer history of white-led race riots in the United States, as both state and vigilante actors have twisted the memory of that history toward maintaining an antidemocratic and racist status quo. Motivating such riotous eruptions is what we call reactive memory in reference to the formation of historical mythologies that valorize a “return” t…
Decolonizing Regions
The case of Southern regionalism shows both the problems with current treatments of regionalism—illustrative of the problem of colonialist perspectives more generally—and the path forward. That path forward involves rethinking whose ancestors count as members of a place, the issue of whose voices are centered, memory and trauma, and counterpublics. The authors advise (1) embracing the field’s interest in local identities and identity movements—th…
Commemorative places, political spaces: Virginia Indians, the Jamestown Quadricentennial, and the quest for sovereignty
This essay examines the cross-cultural communication strategies deployed by a coalition of indigenous tribes in Virginia to leverage the Quadricentennial commemoration of the founding at Jamestown in support of their sovereignty campaign. The tensions between Jamestown’s mythos as the “birthplace of democracy” and the natives’ historical and contemporary lived experiences, combined with the national and international attention focused on the even…
Experiences of Latino Men in Stepfamily Education
Relationship education evaluations have historically overlooked the experiences of ethnically diverse populations and stepfamilies. Using qualitative methods, this study examines the experiences of 16 Latino men in a stepfamily relationship education program. The four emergent themes dealt with recruitment and participation, improved family relationships, the value and importance of the family, and normalization of the participants' stepfamily si…
Stepfathers and Stepfamily Education
Although stepfamily education is believed to improve family relationships, little is known about how stepfamily education impacts stepfather relationships specifically. Using a systems theory approach, this qualitative study examines the experiences of 14 European American stepfathers who participated in a 12-hour research-based stepfamily education course. Although the majority of men initially needed some encouragement to attend, they all felt …

Stepfamily Education: A Case Study
Benefits of Stepfamily Education: One-Year Post-Program
There has been an increase in the prevalence of stepfamilies, and being a member of a stepfamily carries with it unique challenges. Stepfamily education programs have tried to address these specific challenges. Although it is believed these programs can have a positive influence on the lives of stepfamilies, little research has been done to evaluate the effects of such stepfamily education. The aim of this article is to address the lasting effect…
International Assistance to the Former Soviet Union: Conditions and Transitions1
Since the demise of the Soviet Union the newly independent states (NIS) have attempted the wholesale reform of their economic, political, and social institutions. With varying levels of success they have sought to create new institutions or reorganize old institutions, often so as to mirror similar institutions in western Europe and North America. Many nations and international organizations have sought to influence these transitions with technic…
Labor Organization and Electoral Participation in Industrial Democracies
The literature on the determinants of electoral participation has paid little attention to the role of labor organization. Adopting the familiar heuristic of costs and benefits, we argue that aggregate rates of turnout will be affected strongly by the strength of the labor movement. This hypothesis is tested using cross-sectional and pooled time series data for nineteen industrial democracies and the fifty American states. The results indicate th…
Appetite of the wolf: German foreign assistance for central and eastern Europe
In this article we examine German foreign aid for central and eastern Europe in order to determine which foreign policy course Germany is likely to pursue. We outline the dominant debates over German foreign policy, review German aid programmes to eastern Europe, define the patterns evident within these policies and then analyse their key characteristics in relation to these on‐going debates. In our conclusion we then compare the predictions from…
On the Determinants of the Success of Economic Sanctions: An Empirical Analysis
Theory: Theories predicting the success of economic sanctions are tested on the universe of sanction episodes from 1914 to 1989. Hypotheses: The probability of success depends upon the cost to the target nation, the extent of trade linkages between target and sender, the stability of the target, the amount of time sanctions are in force, and whether financial sanctions are utilized. Method: Data are analyzed using logistic regression. Results: Th…
