Dispositional Empathy and the Political Gender Gap
The gender gap in contemporary American politics refers to differences in politicalattitudes and behavior between men and women that may be traced back to the 1980 presidential election and the Reagan presidency. For nearly two decades, men have displayed consistently more conservative and pro-Republican preferences than women. Although the gender gap has been well-documented and recognized by practitioners and scholars alike, explanations of why…

Images and Issues in the 1988 Presidential Election
This article uses a methodology first suggested in "The Two Faces of Issue Voting" by Carmines and Stimson (1980) to disaggregate voters into "issue voters" and "image voters." An application of this methodology to the 1988 American National Election Study dataset demonstrates that image voters provided Dukakis with a slight advantage over Bush in the 1988 election, and that Dukakis was the primary beneficiary of negative image voting. Issue vote…
Compassion & Voting Behavior in Presidential Elections
This study examines the role of compassion in voter assessments of candidate images in the 1988 presidential election. It is a quality often ignored in these analyses. This article compares compassion with three other dimensions of candidate image-leadership, integrity, and intelligence-and finds that approximately two-fifths of all voters in 1988 were influenced more by their evaluations of the candidates' level of compassion than by the other d…

Trading Security for Seats: Strategic Considerations in the Redistricting Process
In this paper, we examine redistricting in the 1982 House elections, paying particular attention to the strategic elements of redistricting. We argue that past reliance on aggregate approaches has hindered district-level studies of strategic processes and effects. To overcome this problem, we propose a method that uses individual districts as the unit of analysis. After showing how our district-level approach works, we apply it to the 1982 House …
What Makes PACs Tick? An Analysis of the Allocation Patterns of Economic Interest Groups
This study focuses on the allocation patterns of PACs representing specific corporations and specific unions in the 1978 House elections for the purpose of discerning the goals that motivate economic interest groups. The findings indicate that economic interests are motivated by a variety of goals and that generic treatments of labor and corporate PACs mask the diverse orientations of individual PACs. Several PACs are found to be motivated by con…
Issue Preferences and Candidate Choice in Presidential Primaries
This study employs CBS News-New York Times primary election exit surveys for twenty 1976 presidential primaries to assess the impact of issue preferences upon candidate choice in presidential primaries. Findings indicate that issue-voting was slightly stronger in the 1976 Republican primaries than in the 1976 Democratic primaries, but that issues generally do not predict the outcomes of the 1976 primaries very well. Some consequences of issue-vot…
