    We investigate the importance of the abortion issue in the state Lieutenant Governor's election in Virginia in 1989. We find that the abortion issue became increasingly important as the campaign progressed and was an important predictor of vote choice.     By estimating path coefficients for voting behavior in the 1960, 1968, and 1976 elections, this research both fills in missing elections in Schulman and Pomper's (1975) original research on variability in electoral behavior and extends the analysis to include the 1976 election. Viewing all six elections from 1956 to 1976, it becomes obvious that issue voting was abnormally high in the 1964 and 1972 elections. Nonetheless, even excluding these two…
