The vanguard of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Beyond Islamophobia
This study delves into the contentious discourse surrounding the construction of a mosque in Daehyun-dong, Daegu City, South Korea, which has persisted from 2021 to the present. It examines the interplay between economic interests and cultural conflicts involving Muslim migrants and the local Korean population. Through the fieldwork research, including interviews with residents and migrant Muslim communities, the research moves beyond the convent…
Settlement versus Onward Migration
This study investigates the transnational mobility of Iranian women pursuing higher education in South Korea, focusing on their motivations, adaptation, and postgraduation trajectories. Drawing on the influence of the Korean Wave since the 2000s, it examines how popular culture, gender constraints in Iran, and migration aspirations intersect. Despite their initial attraction to Korea’s global image, many face cultural barriers, discrimination, an…

Wavering theocratic ideology and the politicization of Shia identity
The Journey to the Formation of Regional Identity in West Asia beyond Otherness
Unfinished Revolutions and Precarious Lives

To veil or not to veil
This paper explores the significance of the hijab as an emblem of the state ideologies and policies of Iran and Turkey. It also discusses the movements of resistance relating to it undertaken by women in these countries. In both Iran and Turkey, the hijab carries a political significance beyond being a simple veil; indeed, it has raised important policy issues through history. Unlike contemporary societies in the West, where the acceptance of div…
Women as Subject of Defiance and Everyday Politics of Hijab as Dress Code in Modern Iran
In this article I delve into the cultural meanings of the hijab in urban Iranian society by examining the ways in which Iranian Muslim women use it. I discuss the hijab as symbol of social conflict rather than repression. Based on eighteen months of fieldwork in Teheran, including participant observation and in-depth interviews, I examine the Iranian women’s subjective choices and narratives regarding the hijab. My data show that the hijab has be…
