Our diggers would turn in their graves
Commemorating wars plays an important role in reinforcing a sense of national identity in many countries. Bellah's (1967) work on civil religion argues that such commemorations have a quasi-sacred character and can have cohesive-inclusive and coercive-exclusive effects. This article examines how references to the Australian New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) are incorporated into far-right messaging online where the Anzac legend is typically discusse…
Does the Awareness of Mortality Shape People's Openness to Violence and Conflict? An Examination of Terror Management Theory
Terror management theory (TMT) proposes that evoking death‐related thoughts (mortality salience; MS) in individuals or groups can lead to stronger worldview defence and greater support for extremist violence. In three experiments, we tested whether an MS manipulation, and associated moderators, increased support for extremist violence. In Australian university students, Study 1 found no statistically significant main or moderated effects for MS o…
Elections and Political Order in Russia
Russia held its first multiparty election in over 75 years in the hope that it would usher in a new democratic political order. However, the success of right-wing populist Vladimir Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party of Russia and other anti-reform forces shocked the world. This study analyzes the background, events and main players of the elections, and examines their significance for the Russian political system. Describing in detail the Dec…
Elections and political order in Russia
For the first time since the Soviet period began in Russia competitive elections were conducted in that country in December 1993 on 'multi‐party' principles. In the campaign for election to the Russian State Duma several new issues arose on the Russian political scene: these include media coverage, electoral association campaign techniques, the new institutional structures that were established as a result of the Constitutional referendum and the…
Electoral associations in the 1993 elections to the Russian State Duma
The Russian Federation elections of December 1993 were the first multi‐party elections in Russian history in over 70 years, and allowed the first real test of the emerging party system, while also giving individual candidates a significant role in the electoral process. The election served to demonstrate how far the system had evolved since the previous elections, held under the reformed Soviet system in 1989, but also showed the limits to the es…
A note on women in the CPSU central committee, 1990
THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE, the executive body of the CPSU, was a heavily maledominated institution, although in recent years the number of women elected to it slowly increased. For instance, in 1981 there were 19 women (4%) among the 470 candidates (non-voting) and full members elected to the Central Committee, while 21 of the 477 (4.4%) members and candidates elected in 1986 were women.' Table 1 contains a breakdown of the 1990 Central Committee acc…
