  • Long-term Rural Settlement Continuity and Land Use during the Bronze and Iron Ages in the Northern Franconian Low Mountain Range

Open Access•Timo Seregély, Katja Kothieringer et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2024•References: 1

In this article, the authors present the salient archaeological results of a diachronic, interdisciplinary research project on rural settlement and land use in a region of low mountains in southern Germany. Despite clear locational disadvantages, in particular great distances to drinking water sources, archaeological excavations and an extensive dating programme document an unexpectedly long continuity of prehistoric settlement in the area

  • Emancipation Against All Odds? The Conservatism Charge to Deliberative Democracy Reconsidered

Open Access•Andreas Schäfer, Andreas W Schäfer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Deliberative Democracy•2023

Although deliberative democracy has been conceptualized as an emancipatory project, it has since been accused of producing conservative outcomes. This article provides a critical and comprehensive review of the conservatism charge by asking: Does deliberative democracy’s mechanisms systematically undermine its emancipatory claim? What are the persistent and emerging obstacles to the realization of deliberative democracy's emancipatory potential? …

  • Mid‐ to Late Holocene landscape dynamics and rural settlement in the uplands of northern Bavaria, Germany

Open Access•Katja Kothieringer, Timo Seregély et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022•References: 4

We present results from a systematic interdisciplinary study on (pre‐)historic rural settlement and landscape development in an upland region of northern Bavaria, Germany. The archaeological and geoarchaeological investigations—supported by radiocarbon dating, optically stimulated luminescence dating, and palaeoecological analysis—were performed to (i) identify so far unknown prehistoric rural settlement sites, (ii) determine site‐specific soil e…

  • Emancipation or Reaction

  • Digital heuristics

    Open Access•Andreas Schäfer•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 24

This article proposes the concept of digital heuristics to model and explain political communication strategies in the complex environment of hybrid media systems. Insights from recent psychological and political research on heuristic decision-making are combined with literature on the current structural context and features of online communication in order to make the case for a heuristics-oriented approach to political communication strategies.…

  • A holistic analysis of passenger travel energy and greenhouse gas intensities

    Open Access•Andreas Schäfer, Andreas W Schäfer et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2020

  • Doubting radiocarbon dating from in-slag charcoal

    Open Access•Guntram Gassmann, Andreas Schäfer•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2018

A Roman-Period bloomery smelting site had been excavated in the Lahn valley at Wetzlar-Dalheim in central Germany during 2006–2012. The production unit consisted of a big rectangular workshop pit with 13 slag pit-furnaces, two waste dumps and a small sunken hut. The stratigraphical sequence, along with abundant pottery and small finds, allows the dating of short-lived smelting activity to a time slot around the third quarter of the first century …

  • Zwischen Repräsentation und Diskurs

    Open Access•Andreas Schäfer, Andreas W Schäfer•BOOK•Zwischen Repräsentation und Diskurs•2017

  • Long-term trends in domestic US passenger travel

    Open Access•Andreas Schäfer, Andreas W Schäfer•ARTICLE•Transportation•2017

  • Deliberation in representative institutions

    Andreas Schäfer•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 36

This article presents a novel analytical account of the relationship between deliberation and representation by reconstructing the specific institutional logics that guide deliberative action in parliaments. In contrast to the dominant generalised paradigm in empirical deliberation research it develops a contextualised-systemic approach. The article argues that the parliamentary context is characterised by a tension between two equally legitimate…
