  • The historic failure of the EU and nationalism in the Covid 19 pandemic

    Open Access•Roderic Pitty•ARTICLE•Australian and New Zealand…•2022

Analysis of per capita death rate figures from officially recorded deaths and credible estimates of excess deaths until late 2021 shows that almost all countries in the European Union (EU) performed poorly during the first two years of the Covid 19 pandemic. This historic failure is linked to previous processes of disintegration, including the impact of prolonged austerity policies on the capacity of public health systems. Forms of nationalism th…

  • Russian Views of Stalinism as a Negative Satellite of Capitalism

    Roderic Pitty•ARTICLE•Europe Asia Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Indigenous peoples achieved a diplomatic success in 2007 when the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This paper analyses why this occurred, and assesses what the Declaration means for state sovereignty. It highlights two reasons why the Global Indigenous Caucus gained widespread endorsement for a Declaration that strongly affirms Indigenous self-determination. First, as a transnational…

  • Imagining Liberation

    Roderic Pitty•ARTICLE•Debatte Journal of Contemporary…•2009•References: 3

This article reviews hidden critiques of Stalinism published in the USSR from the late 1960s until the relaxation of censorship in the late 1980s. The main focus is on those Russian scholars who analysed particular phenomena in the Third World as a parallel process to highlight key problems in the USSR. The work of several of these “inside dissidents” who used Aesopian language to criticize Stalinism is explained in terms of the weakening of ideo…

The Liberal Party's failure to grant diplomatic recognition to the People's Republic of China in the early 1970s soon became a source of embarrassment, after President Richard Nixon announced US recognition in 1972. In pursuing the question of why the Gorton and McMahon governments were so wrong-footed, factors such as the role of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) in domestic politics and the hierarchical bureaucracy in the Department of External …
