  • Collaborative Crisis Management

Fredrik Bynander, Daniel Nohrstedt•EDITOR•BOOK•Collaborative Crisis Management•2019

"Public organizations are increasingly expected to cope with crisis under the same resource constraints and mandates that make up their normal routines, reinforced only through collaboration. Collaborative Crisis Management introduces readers to how collaboration shapes societies' capacity to plan for, respond to, and recover from extreme and unscheduled events. Placing emphasis on five conceptual dimensions, this book teaches students how this p…

  • Managing Crises Collaboratively

Open Access•Daniel Nohrstedt, Fredrik Bynander et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Public Management…•2018

Effective interorganizational collaboration is a pivotal ingredient of any community or nation’s capacity to prepare for and bounce back from disruptive crisis events. The booming research field of collaborative public management (CPM) has been yielding important insights into such collaboration that as yet await transfer to the study of crisis management (CM). Also, we argue that the general CPM literature has not sufficiently addressed the dist…

  • Explaining success and failure in crisis coordination

Arjen Boin, Fredrik Bynander•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series A…•2015

In virtually every assessment of responses to large‐scale crises and disasters, coordination is identified as a critical failure factor. After the crisis, official committees and political opponents often characterize the early phases of the response as a ‘failure to coordinate.’ Not surprisingly, improved coordination quickly emerges as the prescribed solution. Coordination, then, is apparently both the problem and the solution. But the proposed…

  • Crisis management at the government offices

Open Access•Gerry Larsson, Fredrik Bynander et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2015

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to gain a deeper understanding of crisis management at the Swedish Government office level in an international crisis by using a multiperspective approach, and paying particular attention to factors contributing favorably to the management process. Design/methodology/approach – The Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption on Iceland in 2010 was accompanied by an ash cloud that caused serious air traffic problems in…

  • The Art of Handing Over

    Open Access•Fredrik Bynander, Paul ''T Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Government and Opposition•2008•Cited by: 17•References: 8

SECURING ORDERLY TRANSITION OF POWER FROM ONE RULER TO another is a classic problem for polities of any kind. Historically, ruler succession episodes were often marred by fierce competition and infighting among members of the ruling elite. Even in stable democratic systems with effective electoral and other procedures for replacing heads of government, leadership rotation within political parties retains some of these brutal qualities. Party lead…

  • The Politics of Party Leader Survival and Succession

Fredrik Bynander, Paul ''T Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2007•Cited by: 22•References: 28

The processes of replacement of party leaders are well-published events in media outlets across the world's democracies, but are scarcely analysed by political scientists. In this article we examine the extent to which incumbent party leaders are able to

  • When Power Changes Hands

    Open Access•Fredrik Bynander, Paul ''T Hart et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2006•Cited by: 18•References: 19

Leadership succession in democratic governments and political parties is an ubiquitous but relatively understudied phenomen, where the political becomes intensely personal and vice versa. This article outlines the puzzles that leadership succession poses to political analysts, reviews the literature, and offers a conceptual framework deconstructing the process in terms of a flow from succession contexts and triggers via the role choices of key pa…

  • Governing by Looking Back

    Open Access•Annika Brändström, Fredrik Bynander et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration•2004•Cited by: 57•References: 25

This article offers a conceptual framework that broadens and enhances our understanding of the role of ‘history’ in contemporary governance and the attempts by policy‐makers to ‘manage’ critical issues. Building upon the literature on historical analogies in policy‐making, we distinguish three dimensions that clarify how the past may emerge in and affect the current deliberations, choices and rhetoric of policy‐makers. We apply this in a comparat…

  • The 1982 Swedish Hårsfjärden Submarine Incident

    Open Access•Fredrik Bynander•ARTICLE•Cooperation and Conflict•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This is a study of the complex problems faced by the authorities when coping with the first major submarine chase in Sweden during the 1980s. The incident was to establish a disturbing pattern for Swedish territorial defence that lasted for the rest of the decade. Having experienced a major `success' in the submarine defence area a year earlier in the so-called `whisky-on-the-rocks' crisis, the Swedish military and political leadership was caught…
