Alternative Futures of Right in Pashukanis, Kojève, and Bloch
E.B. Pashukanis’ 1927 Speech on ‘Emergency Legislation Against the Toilers and Their Organisations’
From Hegel to Nietzsche
This article examines Domenico Losurdo’s treatment of Hegel, Marx, Engels, and Nietzsche with the aim of unearthing his critical entanglements with liberalism. I will argue that Losurdo’s reflections on these thinkers betray a deeper ambivalence towards liberalism as a political tradition. This ambivalence ranges depending on which of the thinkers is under Losurdo’s microscope, receiving its starkest expression in Losurdo’s treatment of Nietzsche…
Revisiting the ‘Jewish Question’ and Its Contemporary Discontents
This article revisits the so-called ‘Jewish Question’ against the combined background of Marxist historiography and the resurgence of antisemitic and neofascist politics. It begins by analysing the critical reception of Marx’s formative essay, ‘On the Jewish Question’, and assesses its contemporary relevance in the aftermath of institutionalised antisemitism in the USSR , the monstrosity of the Shoah, the consolidation of the Israeli state, and t…
G.A. Cohen, the neglect of democratic self‐management, and the future of democratic socialism
The retrieval of positive freedom, post-Kantian perfectionism and neo-Roman liberty in contemporary political thought
In recent years, political theorists have increasingly turned their attention to the past in search of conceptual renovation in the present. While recourse to the past has been a recurring thread throughout the history of political thought, the overlapping concern of recent scholarship has been to revisit seemingly exhausted political concepts with the aim of repurposing them for contemporary political challenges and realities. The three edited c…
The Dispossessed
This essay reviews Daniel Bensaïd’s book The Dispossessed: Karl Marx’s Debates on Wood Theft and the Right of the Poor. The book’s first translation into English features a new English translation of Marx’s early journalistic reflections, written for the Rheinische Zeitung, on peasants’ wood theft and an early law to criminalize what had been customarily accepted activity. Bensaïd’s book draws on this history to make critical sense of contemporar…

Market Morality, Socialism, and the Realization of Social Freedom
This article critically examines Axel Honneth’s account of social freedom by paying particular attention to the conceptual apparatus of normative reconstruction that is supposed to lend social freedom its explanatory force. More specifically, the article demonstrates, through an immanent critique, that Honneth is unable to follow through with his ambitious view of the capitalist market as an institutional expression of social freedom. Furthermore…

Revisiting Marx’s Critique of Liberalism
Re-Hegelianizing Marx on Rights
While much has been written in recent years about the significance of Hegel’s Logic for Marx’s method in Capital , less attention has been given to the relevance of Hegel’s method for understanding Marx’s outlook on rights. The dominant view among political theorists across the Anglo-American, Marxist and critical theory traditions is that the revolutionary transformation of capitalism would pave the way for the disappearance of rights in communi…
