Mediatizing the Covid-19 Pandemic
Since its outbreak in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended ways of life all over the world, transforming itself into a medical, social, and political event all at once (Agartan, Cook, & Lin, 2020;Bobba & Hub, 2021; Banque mondiale, 2020).Over the past three years, we have had to learn how to live in an environment reconfigured by the uncertainty resulting from the eruption of a public health crisis of which repercussions have been felt in all …

A Missed Opportunity? Making Sense of the Low Adoption Rate of Covid Alert , Canada’s Contact-Tracing Application
Background: This study reflects on the low adoption rate of COVID Alert, the Canadian contact-tracing application, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysis: Using data from two representative surveys conducted in Canada in 2020, this article examines how the application’s attributes and citizens’ attitudes on the sanitary crisis and on technology may have influenced the low adoption rate of COVID Alert. Conclusions and implications: The results sug…
The imprint of autocracy on immigrant political participation
The study investigates the relationship between premigration experiences with autocracy and immigrants' participation in politics in the host country. Using a survey of about 2000 immigrants in Quebec (Canada) interviewed over telephone or with an online questionnaire, it assesses two possible pathways regarding the effect of premigration with autocracy on participation in the host country politics. One pathway emphasizes a reluctance to particip…
Non-linear agenda-building
A common limitation of most analyses of electoral agenda-building dynamics is that they tend to operate under the assumption that the underlying dynamics between the political actors’ and the media’s agendas are more or less stable across time. Drawing upon recent work on media storms, I theorize that political parties have considerably less influence in periods that are characterized by sudden and explosive increases in media coverage of a parti…
Guns for Votes
This article contributes to the emerging literature on wedge issues and on electoral strategies in multiparty electoral systems by studying the implementation and effectiveness of a concerted electoral communication strategy deployed by the Conservative party of Canada around the elimination of the gun registry, in the late 2000s. First, using a quantitative content analysis of the Parliamentary debates from 2006 to 2011, it reveals how the Conse…
