  • Decentralization, Executive Selection, and Citizen Views on the Quality of Local Governance in African Countries

Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, Michelle T Kuenzi et al.•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 42

Do institutions influence the quality of local governance in Africa? We examine determinants of citizens’ perceptions of the quality of local government using Afrobarometer survey data for twenty-six sub-Saharan African countries and country-level variables. We find that the method of selecting chief executives is a significant factor in citizen evaluations of local governance. Citizens tend to view local governments as less responsive when the c…

  • The economic determinants of electoral volatility in Africa

    Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, John P Tuman et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2019•Cited by: 16•References: 47

Democratic performance and party system institutionalization (PSI) are thought to be integrally linked. Electoral volatility is an important dimension of PSI and has thus been the focus of many studies. Despite the attention given to electoral volatility, its determinants remain elusive. We examine the determinants of electoral volatility in 35 African countries from 1972 to 2010. This study extends the prior literature by analyzing the effects o…

  • Campaign appeals in Nigeria's 2007 gubernatorial elections

Michelle Kuenzi, Gina Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•Democratization•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 40

Ethnicity has emerged as a prominent issue in electoral contests around the world, particularly in countries that have embraced multiparty elections in the past few decades. What factors influence ethnic mobilization and the politicization of ethnicity? Although a number of factors have been hypothesized to influence the politicization of ethnicity in the comparative politics literature, many of these relationships have not been established throu…

  • Who votes in Africa? An examination of electoral participation in 10 African countries

    Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, Gina M S Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2011•Cited by: 40•References: 52

The question ‘Who votes in Africa?’ has yet to receive significant attention. We use Afrobarometer survey data to assess the determinants of voting for over 17,000 voting-age adults in 10 African countries. We find that Africans are driven by many of the same forces as their counterparts elsewhere. The agencies of mobilization are important in determining who votes in these countries. Notably, identifying with a political party is one of the most…

  • Voter Turnout in Africa's Multiparty Regimes

    Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, Gina M S Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2007•Cited by: 45•References: 31

Many people consider voting the most important form of political participation in a democracy. To this point, no aggregate-level, cross-national studies have been done on the factors that affect voter turnout in Africa. This article seeks to fill the gap in the literature by examining the factors that influence voter turnout in sub-Saharan Africa's multiparty regimes that have had two consecutive elections since the democratic transitions in the …

  • Party Systems and Democratic Consolidation in Africa’s Electoral Regimes

    Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, Gina Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2005•Cited by: 58•References: 22

That political parties are necessary ingredients of democratic governance is accepted as an incontrovertible fact by most political observers. Similarly, party system institutionalization is viewed as a requisite for the consolidation of democracy. In contrast, the effects of different party system characteristics on democracy are sharply contested. We contribute to this debate through a systematic analysis of the relationship between three party…

  • Party System Institutionalization in 30 African Countries

    Open Access•Michelle Kuenzi, Gina Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2001•Cited by: 115•References: 8

In their study of 12 Latin American countries, Mainwaring and Scully develop a framework to assess levels of party system institutionalization and explore the impact of the degree of party system institutionalization on democratic consolidation. In this paper, we provide a description of the levels of party system institutionalization in the African context. Employing three criteria adapted from the framework of Mainwaring and Scully, we systemat…

  • Uganda's Referendum 2000: The Silent Boycott

Michael Bratton, Gina Lambright et al.•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2001•Cited by: 11

On the surface, the results of Uganda's Referendum 2000 suggest that voters rejected multiparty pluralism in favour of an inclusive, no‐party, ‘movement’ system. Yet, a public attitude survey conducted shortly before the referendum tells a somewhat different story. To be sure, Ugandans give credit to President Museveni and the National Resistance Movement for substantial achievements in office. But voters were not well informed about the referend…

This survey of Uganda recorded Ugandan citizens' opinions about social issues and about recent political and economic changes within their country. Respondents' views were elicited on the former regime, political life and membership in organizations, the meaning of the word "democracy," trustworthiness of the governmen…
