The conundrum of coalition politics in Turkey
Turkey has had a long track record of coalition governments, yet when the June 7, 2015 general elections produced a hung parliament attempts at establishing a new coalition government failed. Why was this so? This paper argues that the non-compromising attitude of the AKP and the MHP, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the recalcitrance of the President, who perceived any government he had no firm control over as a threat to his political c…
Turkish party system
Research indicated that partisan affiliation, ideological and economic factors are the main determinants of the voters’ party preferences at Turkish elections. However, as Turkish political parties have been non-institutionalized structures, the role played by their political leaders seems to be larger than life. This paper seeks to assess the relative impact of the party leaders on the voters’ party preferences vis-à-vis ideology, partisan ident…
The Rising Tide of Conservatism in Turkey
This book analyzes the development and impact of conservatism on Turkish politics in the post-Cold War era. Exploring the impact of international system change on Turkey over the course of recent even
Attitudinal Orientation to Party Organizations in Turkey in the 2000s
The Turkish party system experienced a serious blow in the early 1980s, when the military government in power closed down all the former legal political parties. Therefore, little evidence of strong psychological ties between voters and the political parties they supported at the polls is expected. This essay draws upon existing literature on voting behavior to develop four hypotheses to explain partisan affiliations of Turkish voters. Each of th…
Politics of Conservatism in Turkey
The 1990s have witnessed growing electoral support for parties to the right of the political spectrum in Turkish politics. As the political left shrunk, the political gravity in electoral and party politics shifted toward the Islamic revivalist and ultra‐nationalist Turkish parties. This article examines the nature of this ideological shift, with special focus on the politics of conservatism. The findings of major survey research conducted in Apr…
Religiosity and protest behaviour
Since the 1960s, Turkey has experienced an increasing variety of political acts carried out to influence, hinder or protest decisions taken by the political authorities. As acts of protest, they ha
The Mystery of the Türban
The covering up of women’s heads and shoulders for religious reasons (türban) has become the most important valence issue in Turkish politics since the 1980s. Interestingly, various studies argued that the türban was not necessarily a religious symbol or demand, but a means for women to escape the wrath of their families. This study aims to assess the role that religiosity plays in determining attitudes toward the türban, and search for evidence …
Turkish Democracy
Despite Turkey's long record of electoral democracy, its system has failed to provide the expected continuity and stability. This article examines the factors behind shortcomings in Turkish democracy. It includes a consideration of public attitudes, party organization, political participation, the rule of law, patronage, and protest. The goal is to provide a coherent and balanced picture of both weaknesses in the Turkish political system and reas…
Elections and Party Preferences in Turkey
Two major factors are identified as sources of party preference among voters in Turkey. The main theoretical assertion of the article is that party preferences of the Turkish voters across a left-right continuum are determined by the historical divide between the center and the periphery of the Turkish polity and rapid social mobilization. Data for the study consist of the findings of the Turkish Values Survey of 1990, in which 1,030 adults were …
Measuring Political Participation
As an area which lends itself to empirical analysis, political participation has been subject to rigorous attempts at operationalization. In this article, an extension of these efforts is intended. Employing data collected in Kenya, Korea, and Turkey, a ten-item, three-dimensional scale of political participation is developed. The overall structure of the scale closely resembles the findings of Verba, Nie, and Kim—a fact which also lends support …
Why Legislatures Persist in Developing Countries
Two conventional views-that legislatures are self-defeating obstacles to change in less developed countries, and that legislatures depend for their existence on democratic political cultures-conflict with the evidence that legislatures do in fact persist in many such countries and that support for them extends beyond the groups having democratic values. Evidence from a large scale survey of public attitudes toward legislators and the legislature …
