  • Postlapsarian Meditations: Labor and Political Participation in Socrates and Aristotle, with a Kantian Footnote

    Open Access•Samuel A Butler•ARTICLE•Constellations•2015

Labor occupies an interesting and important position in the history of critical theory. At the same time, it is difficult even to describe its role in the broad terms of an introduction without controversy. It is possible to begin with Hegel, where labor serves an important epistemic purpose in challenging dualism. As so often happens, what is of theoretical interest for Hegel takes on concrete dimensions for Marx, whether in his concern for rela…

  • Space, Territory, and Territoriality

    Open Access•Claude Raffestin, Samuel A Butler•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2012•Cited by: 117•References: 13

In this paper I reconstitute my own approach to the notions of space, territory, and territoriality. Developing from the early 1970s, my thoughts resided in the effort devoted to deriving from space the idea of territory qua production by the projection of labor, a Janus-faced category composed of energy and information. The construction of territory is the consequence of territoriality-defined as the ensemble of relations that a society maintain…

  • A Fourth Subject Position of Care

    Open Access•Samuel A Butler•ARTICLE•Hypatia•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Analyses of care work typically speak of three necessary roles of care: the care worker, the care recipient, and an economic provider who makes care materially possible. This model provides no place for addressing the difficult political questions care poses for liberal representative democracy. I propose to fill this space with a new caring role to connect the care unit to the political sphere, as the economic provider connects the care unit to …

  • Geometry in the Colossal: The Project of Metaphysical Globalization

    Open Access•Peter Sloterdijk, Samuel A Butler•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2009•Cited by: 11•References: 2

Geometry in the colossal" ( Geometrie in Ungeheurem) appears as pages 47-72 of the second volume of Peter Sloterdijk's Sphären-the volume is entitled Globen, 'Globes'. The excerpt is a beginning of the history of the idea of the sphere or the globe. As claimed by Heidegger in the epigraph, the conquest of the world as picture is the fundamental event of modernity. The historical question that arises, then, is that of the rise of the globe as the …
