Cosmopolitan realism and the inward turn
Some self-declared defenders of democracy maintain that a suspension of the 'cosmopolitan agenda' is necessary to blunt the appeal of insurgent right wing populism. I argue that cosmopolitans should support this 'inward turn' when doing so helps to preserve the long-term viability of that agenda. Cosmopolitans must certainly motivate citizens of different countries to support it. However, they must also encourage those citizens to support democra…
From liberal to multiculturalist nationalism
This paper reconsiders liberal nationalism in light of the current autocratic nationalist threat. I argue that liberal nationalism cannot redress the social ailments which acclimatize people to the sorts of no-holds-barred political contestation favoured by autocratic nationalists – excessive polarization. I then argue that liberal nationalists do not recognize the degree to which ‘in-group’ racial solidarity motivates members of the racial/ethni…

Inclusive unity and the liberal democratic front
The Hard-Edged Boundaries of Inclusive Democratic Unity
This article considers how democrats should work to protect and promote both political and social equality. Democrats should aspire to cultivate a sort of unity among citizens that is delineated by distinctly hard-edged boundaries. This unity should only encompass the democratic mainstream and should explicitly exclude autocratic citizens who reject political and social equality. Such political antagonism can serve as a resource to unite democrat…
Aristotelian Realism
This paper argues that the pursuit of stability is the primary concern of Aristotle's understanding of political friendship. Specifically, I argue that Aristotle chooses to understand political friendship to be a “special sort” of utility/advantage friendship, applicable to multiple regime types of varying degrees of (in)equality, because he fears what might happen when citizens in any polity develop mutual animosity. Turning to the contemporary …
Quantitative Analysis of Phrasing Strategies in Expressive Performance
This paper presents computational methods for quantitative description and analysis of expressive performance strategies in violin performances. We present general techniques for extracting beat-level tempo and loudness data, and the Local Maximum Phrase Detection (LMPD) method. The LMPD method equates local maxima in the loudness curve with interpreted phrases, and defines measures of phrase strength (clarity), phrase volatility (standard deviat…
