Reparative Democracy: Testing the Borders of the Political. Interview with Wendy Brown
In this interview with Mark Devenney, Wendy Brown reflects on the current sociopolitical context in relation to her proposal of a “reparative democracy” which allows to face the increasing threat of right-wing ideologies and ecosystemic collapse
The Democratic Limits of Populist Politics
The publication of Ernesto Laclau's On Populist Reason1 in 2005 inspired a generation of left populist scholars who were convinced that populist articulation could secure a democratic politics of equality against neoliberal capital. There is good reason for this. Laclau and Mouffe recognized, two decades prior to 2005, the political failures of the class-centric, revolutionary politics of twentieth-century Marxism.2 For feminist, queer, green, in…
The Improper Politics of Democracy and Property
Interrogating the limits of post-foundational accounts of political economy, this response to Taavi Sundell, proposes three conceptual shifts. First, I argue that the distinction between politics and economics polices a border that absolves economic questions of their implication in policing appropriation and political order. Second, I think political economy in terms of proprietary order. The notion of proprietary order situates reproduction in …

Rethinking populism and democracy in politically turbulent times
The past two decades have witnessed a resurgence of populist politics across the globe. The early 21st century saw the pink tide of left wing populism in Latin America, the Southern European populisms that rejected the politics of austerity after 2013, and the right wing populisms that now dominate not only European but global polities. Although each instance of populist politics is distinct, all share an appeal to the people, to the true people,…

A Reply to Revolutionary Subjectivity in Post-Marxist Thought: The Case of Laclau and Badiou by Oliver Harrison
This brief article is a response to and critique of Oliver Harrison's account of revolutionary subjectivity in the work of Badiou and Laclau. I conted that Harrison's article points to important links between Marx's thought and the thought of these so called post-marxist theorist. However, I argue that the injunction we are left with is to give an adequate account of the transformation of production and reproduction in cintemproary global societi…
Property, Propriety and Democracy
The redefinition of rights of equality and liberty by radical and deliberative democrats during the last decades of the 20th century resulted in the denial that a consideration of property is integral to political philosophy. Theorizing property as intrinsically political demands a return to Marx but on terms he may not have recognized. I outline a politics of property in this paper contending that there can be no universal justification for any …
Discourses and Practices of Terrorism: Interrogating Terror
The material and discursive consequences of counter-terror discourse on the organization of life in democratic societies are already apparent, but what about the functions of this discourse in and of itself, as a mode of communication and \nengagement? Through the expression and transmission of fear and paranoid anxiety this discourse justified the extension of security agency powers and legitimizes a ‘politics’ of securitization, by redefining p…
The limits of communicative rationality and deliberative democracy
This article argues that Habermas' account of deliberative democracy rests upon a set of untheorized decisions about language and communication derived from his account of formal pragmatics. Assessing the limitations of his formal pragmatics thus demonstrates why the account of deliberative democracy is incapable of adequately addressing asymmetries in power, generated by economic and bio‐political discourses. I contend that disagreement is intri…
Ethics and Politics in Contemporary Theory Between Critical Theory and Post-Marxism
In addressing the political and theoretical debates between critical and post-Marxist theorists, this book discusses the politics of communication and rationality, subjectivity, sovereignty, ethics and deliberative democracy, considering questions such as:* Does the theory of communicative action justify deliberative democracy?* Is a theory of hegemony compatible with an account which relies upon an ideal of communicative success?* Is autonomy a …
Ethics and politics in contemporary theory: Between critical theory and post-Marxism
The end of the Cold War and the subsequent critique of Communism as a viable political alternative to liberal democracies has led to an often uncritical acceptance of an emerging global capitalist order. In this book, Mark Devenney seeks an alternative perspective drawn from a synthesis of critical theory and post-Marxist theory while avoiding the reactionary fundamentalism that rejects altogether the possibility of building an enlightened, secul…
