  • The Evolution of Women’s Activism in Russia

Regina Smyth, Ivan S Grigoriev et al.•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2026•References: 20

New evidence suggests that the gender protest gap—the difference between male and female participation in protest events—has decreased in Russia prior to February 2022, despite the patriarchal, authoritarian regime. Following the comparative literature, we rely on a survey experiment to show that women strategically participate in activism that have limited risk of state violence or social sanctions. Distinctions between the nature of protests an…

  • Popular conservatisms and the structure of Russian society

    Open Access•Anna A Dekalchuk, Ivan S Grigoriev et al.•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2024•References: 21

The literature on Russia’s conservative turn focuses on the state program to embed conservative values in a top-down process of narrative construction that links shared history, lived experiences, and events. Relying on the unique LegitRuss survey evidence collected in 2021, we complement this research by exploring how values-based cleavages structure Russian society, bind distinct social groups, and reflect congruence between the Kremlin’s conse…

  • Patterns of international organizations’ engagement in reform and policy making in the post-Soviet space

    Open Access•Anna A Dekalchuk, Ivan S Grigoriev et al.•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2024•References: 48

The paper explains how states and international organisations interact in policy making by focusing on five countries of the post-Soviet space. Based on in-depth interviews conducted in Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, we explore different patterns of state-IO interactions and explain the determinants of these patterns' formation. We demonstrate that these patterns arise from a combination of two country-level factors: polit…

  • Russian and Western scholarly perspectives on EU–Russia relations in Justice and Home Affairs

    Anna A Dekalchuk, Aleksandra Khokhlova•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary European…•2018•References: 9

The paper explores the state of academic dialogue between the Russian and Western scholarly communities studying the European Union (EU)–Russia relations in Justice and Home Affairs (JHA). By analyzing the citation patterns of the academic articles on the EU–Russia cooperation in this area, we arrive at the conclusion that the Russian scholarship mostly does not engage in a transnational academic dialogue with the Western counterparts. In other w…

  • Collective learning and regime dynamics under uncertainty

    Ivan S Grigoriev, Anna A Dekalchuk•ARTICLE•Democratization•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 32

The article questions the structural approach to autocratic transition that sees government as knowingly and purposely building autocracy, and contributes to the tradition emphasizing the plurality of possible regime developments and the role of contingency therein, by providing a more systematic treatment of such contingency. We offer a path-dependent theory of political change and use insights from cognitive institutionalism to show how ad hoc …
