  • Performing crisis to create your enemy: Europe vs. the EU in Hungarian populist discourse

    Open Access•Robert Sata•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Political Science•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Hungary has become the leader of democratic backsliding within Europe, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán turning into the staunchest critic of the EU, despite a consistent support for the European project among the wider public and Hungary being a net benefiter of EU membership. Using a systematic analysis of all speeches, statements and interviews of the PM for his three consecutive governments 2010–2022, I claim the radicalization of this Eurosc…

  • Illiberal spectatorship – the disfigurement of citizenship in Hungary and Poland

    Open Access•Robert Sata, Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary European…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 24

Both governments have been building an ‘illiberal democracy’ using the populist promise to return power to the people. • Caesarean politics in Hungary and Poland

    Open Access•Robert Sata, Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2020•Cited by: 61•References: 36

We propose the new concept of Caesarean politics to explain democratic deconsolidation in Hungary and Poland. We argue the move towards illiberal democracy in both countries has been made possible by a shift towards Caesarean politics, in which radical changes are framed as “politics as usual”, while in fact these challenge the essence of liberal democracy. Focusing on the three pillars of Caesarean politics: (1) patronal politics, (2) state capt…
