  • Looking beyond the East-West divide? Re-appraising the willingness to pay for environmental quality in 19 European countries

    Jelisaveta Vukelić, Indraneel Sircar•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2024•References: 65

This article explores the diversity in willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental quality, highlighting distinctions not only between Eastern and Western Europe but also within former communist countries (FCCs). We obtain mixed results, with little evidence of a generational shift in WTP across birth cohorts, more rapid societal shifts in non-FCCs, and higher levels of baseline WTP in Southeast European FCCs. Drawing on our findings, we advocate …

  • The experience of cities during the Covid 19 pandemic

    Open Access•Mina Petrović, Jelisaveta Vukelić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2023

The Covid 19 pandemic, taken as a social crisis, has pointed to the high vulnerability of the basic organizational principles of modern society and the inherent inequalities, particularly those related to the urban space. Therefore, the first part of the paper presents ideas and practices initiated by the Covid 19 pandemic regarding (re)conceptualization of urban mobility and (re)organization of urban spaces in searching for more sustainable and …

  • The unusual weakness of the economic agenda at protests in times of austerity

    Jelisaveta Vukelić, Jelena Pešić•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 39

The Great Recession of 2008 created a political opportunity for the mobilisation of various social groups, especially those most affected by the crisis. However, the two largest protest waves in Serbia - Against Dictatorship and One of Five Million, did not articulate economic grievances as the most pressing. The main question is why economic demands were so weakly expressed during these protests. Our contention is that the protesters' predominan…

  • Europeanisation from below at the semi-periphery

    Open Access•Jelena Pešić, Jelisaveta Vukelić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2022

This paper focuses on Let?s Defend the Rivers of Stara Planina, a local environmental initiative that has managed to scale up and transnationalise (Europeanise) from below and to generate sufficient pressure on national power-holders to amend existing legislation and halt further construction of small hydropower plants in protected natural areas. Linking the concepts of environmentalism of the poor/dispossessed and the transnationalisation (Europ…

  • Environmental Activism in Serbia

Jelisaveta Vukelić, Mina Petrović et al.•ARTICLE•Balkanologie•2021

The paper explores recent trends in environmental activism in Serbia. Until recently, the Western Balkan region was described as lacking genuine grassroots mobilisation, its civil society dominated by professional organisations. Professional organisations have been under fire as donor-driven, artificial and lacking the constituency and capacity for significant socio-environmental change. A recent upsurge of civic protests against air pollution, i…

  • Who should take care of the poor? Religion and social welfare in America

    Open Access•Jelisaveta Vukelić, Dragan Stanojević•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2014•References: 3

The purpose of this study is to examine the church-state relations in the United States from the perspective of the social welfare system. More precisely, we are questioning the way the conceptual foundations and practical activities of religious organizations influence the directions of social policy and shape the way of dealing with the poor. The first part of the text outlines the main features of religious life and social welfare system in Am…

  • Environmental activism as a new form of political participation of the youth in Serbia

    Open Access•Jelisaveta Vukelić, Dragan Stanojević•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2012

The aim of this paper is to explore whether the environmental activism is a new form of political participation of the Serbian youth. One of the characteristics of the postindustrial societies is a general citizen withdrawal from the traditional channels of political participation. Political disengagement is thought to characterize all citizens but most of all the young people. However, although young people may have turned away from mainstream p…

  • Emotions and social movements

    Open Access•Jelisaveta Vukelić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2012

The aim of this paper is to explore the reasons behind the differences between the organizations dealing with the animal protection and the other environmental organizations. In that sense, the focus of our analysis is the grassroots character of these organizations/associations as well as the emotional basis of the member participation/mobilization. We draw upon the data gathered through the interviews with the organizations' representatives as …

  • Second demographic transition de-blocked

    Open Access•Mirjana Bobić, Jelisaveta Vukelić•ARTICLE•Sociologija•2011

The text is re-examining the previously established dilemma related to whether Serbia (without Kosovo and Metohija) is the country of second demographic transition, i.e.: has the transition been de-blocked, under the assumption that this is a worldwide historical process of transformation of industrialized countries. The last thesis, around which there exists a lot of controversy in the contemporary population theory, is however not dealt with in…
