  • Constitutional Conventions in Central Europe

Open Access•Marek Antoš, Miloš Brunclík et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Post-Communism•2024•References: 7

Besides a legal framework, the political processes of modern polities are affected by other rules, commonly referred to as constitutional conventions. However, constitutional conventions in Central European states have not received particular attention despite growing evidence of their existence. This research note aims to help fill in this gap. We have conducted semi-structured interviews with 46 country experts and delivered comprehensive infor…

  • Idiotic or Columbo’s Wife? Constitutional Conventions in the Czech Republic

    Open Access•Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2023•Cited by: 2

Academics usually look for constitutional conventions in Westminster-style democracies, such as the United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia. Nevertheless, growing evidence from practice shows that constitutional conventions are similarly essential attributes of even substantially different political regimes. This article is the first paper to systematically deal with constitutional conventions in the Czech Republic. To be more specific, I identify e…

  • Legislative Behaviour of MPs in the Czech Republic in Times of Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•Parliamentary Affairs•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 12

The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has affected almost every aspect of our lives. While millions of people fought with the disease, economies, societies and institutions faced side-effects of government measures resisting the spread of the virus. This article describes the effects of the pandemic on the legislative behaviour of MPs in one of the worst-hit countries in the world, the Czech Republic. The results show that the number o…

  • Dynamic roll call analysis of parties’ ideological positions in the Czech Republic

    Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 31

A classification of the party system in the Czech Republic has been challenging. The party system is usually assigned to a type of either moderate or polarised pluralism. Unfortunately, based on easily accessible electoral results, scholars employ counting statistics such as electoral volatility and party system fragmentation analysis excessively. However, to classify the system according to Sartorian typology, ideological patterns should not be …

  • Effects of age and tenure on MPs’ legislative behaviour in the Czech Republic

    Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2019•Cited by: 13•References: 44

Democratic regimes are based on the idea of reflecting the public's plurality of opinions. However, parliamentary representation of some groups of citizens is inadequate. Unlike the underrepresentation of women or ethnic minorities, insufficient participation of young and old age cohorts has not received enough attention yet. To enrich public debate, I scrutinise effects of age and tenure on MPs' parliamentary performance. I utilise a large-N qua…

  • Whose skin is in the game? Party candidates in the Czech Republic

    Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•East European Politics•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Party candidates are the essence of parties. They represent parties in public and importantly, bring them into office and power. Thus, I track more than 150,000 personally unique local elections party candidates in the Czech Republic between 1994 and 2018. The results show that the running party members usually compose 20–60% of parties' members. The average age of the party candidates often increases together with parties' ageing. During the las…

  • The effect of multiple-office holding on the parliamentary activity of MPs in the Czech Republic

    Lukáš Hájek•ARTICLE•Journal of Legislative Studies•2017•Cited by: 12•References: 22

This article deals with multiple-office holdings by legislators in the Czech Republic during the VI. Chamber of Deputies, 2010–2013. First, both positive and negative theoretical consequences of simultaneously holding multiple political offices are depicted. Then, a uniquely detailed database of member of parliament-periods is constructed for quantitative research. Multiple-office holding is demonstrated to be a frequent behaviour among Czech dep…
