Sustainable housing choices. The role of technology preferences
This study employs a stated choice experiment to investigate preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainable housing technologies—solar panel systems, water recycling systems, thermal insulation walls/roofs, and solar domestic hot water systems—in four Colombian cities with varying living costs and climates. Mapping Regionalism and Secessionism: A New Dataset of Territorial Demands in the EU
Universalism within: The tension between universalism and community in progressive ideology
Social‐democratic parties face a dilemma between the universalist ethos of their socialist tradition and the nationalism that they share with the other political actors of the state where they act. In this paper, we examine comparatively the position of the Spanish party Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) and the Catalan party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) on three political debates that pertains to the link between welfare and id…
Ethnic alignment in divided regions: Individual and contextual factors
The literature on sub-state nationalisms in Western democracies usually understands ethnicity as a defining feature of regional parties advocating for group and/or territorial recognition. However, the role of ethnicity for state-wide parties competing in regional elections has not received the same attention. Using observational data at the census section level for the Basque election of 2016, this paper shows how state-wide parties can be even …
The effects of regional attachment on ideological self-placement: A comparative approach
Between a principled and a consequentialist logic: Theory and practice of secession in Catalonia and Scotland
This paper inquires into whether the three types of arguments usually formulated in the normative literature on the legitimacy of secession – i.e. communitarian, choice, and remedial arguments – are articulated (or not) by separatist parties in Catalonia and Scotland. It concludes that these actors do use such arguments, but they tend to merge them in different combinations making a pluralist case for independence rather than developing monist re…
Boundary shifts and vote alignment in Catalonia
This paper analyses the dynamics between ethnic boundaries and electoral alignment in the context of western minority nationalisms by focusing on the Catalan case. In particular, the research explores the changes in boundary shifts at the electoral level, whether they affect differently pro-sovereignty and pro-union parties, and to what extent changes have reinforced the ethnic alignment of vote. Methodologically, the analysis is based on observa…
Secession in Catalonia: Beyond Identity
Interest in Catalan politics has re-emerged in the last few years following the controversial effects of the autonomic reform of 2006 and the rise of a pro-independence agenda in the political deba
Just a Matter of Identity? Support for Independence in Catalonia
The Catalan case is usually depicted in the literature as a typical example of a nation without state with a predominant civic nationalism, where the importance of dual identities tends to generate claims for self-government short of independence. However, the recent evolution of Catalan and Spanish politics shows that independence receives relevant levels of support even among groups expressing some degree of identification with the state identi…
