Immigration and Perceptions of the Political System in Britain
Recently published research contends that concern about immigration is weakening the British political system by creating distrust in the elites and institutions in this system. Some may challenge this finding because the public opinion data used to illustrate this relationship is limited to the period of the recent Labour government, raising the possibility that it was an artefact of that era and thus may no longer hold. Using the most recent ro…
The Cultural Divide in Europe
One of the defining features of modern states is their incorporation of notions of political and social community based on shared language, history, and myths. However, large numbers of citizens in modern states have come to believe their national communities are under threat from several modern forces, including immigration. Using the European Social Survey (2002–9), this article explores the extent to which perceived threats posed by large-scal…
Constructing Democracy in Southern Europe
Why are some regimes democratic while others are not? Specifically, how have Spain and Italy managed to become democratic while Turkey, which shares many similar characteristics, has not? Spain, Italy and Turkey have shared common historical features which would have been disruptive to any new democracy; however they represent a wide array of democratization experiences. Providing a comparative case study analysis, this book offers some clues as …
Explaining Opposition to Turkish Membership of the EU
This article examines EU citizen attitudes to Turkey's bid to join the EU. The key theoretical constructs investigated to explain opposition to Turkey's EU membership are related to rational economic self-interest and group-level interests and concerns. The findings indicate that the former are irrelevant for distinguishing between opponents and supporters of Turkey's candidacy, while the latter do provide fairly powerful explanations for opposit…
Identity, Interests and Attitudes to European Integration
With growing levels of Euroscepticism across EU member states, grasping the roots of opposition to European integration has become more important than ever. This book charts public perceptions of the
Of Time and Causality
Using survey data from The Civic Culture study, this research note revisits the idea that institutional development across the regions of Italy differs because of varying levels of social capital. The findings indicate that – according to the earliest survey data available from Italy – it is unlikely that differences in the development of regional institutions between the North and the South were a result of differences in social capital between …
Opposition to European integration and fear of loss of national identity
Opposition to the European integration project can stem from many different sources, but one that appears to be fairly fundamental is the threat that the European Union (EU) poses to long‐established national identities. This contention may in fact appear to be so trivial as to make it uninteresting to the social science community. However, this article analyses the degree to which EU citizens do indeed feel their national identities to be under …
Turkish Parliamentarians' Perspectives on Turkey's Relations with the European Union
Discusses the results of interviews conducted on a sample of deputies in the Turkish Grand National Assembly, which addressed the lack of information on Turkish opinion regarding the European Union (EU). Background on the relations of Turkey with EU; Assessment of the nature of Turkey's negotiations with the EU, through the analysis of the attitudes of Turkish political elite; Perceived obstacles to Turkish membership in the EU; Factors that infl…
Public Support for the European Union
This research note argues that much of the literature on support for European integration misses the heart of the nature of opposition to this process by ignoring the notion of perceived threat. Essentially, people are hostile toward the European project in great part because of their perceptions of threats posed by other cultures. I analyze this hypothesis by replicating a piece of research that previously appeared in this journal, adding measur…
Immigration and the new politics of inclusion and exclusion in the European Union
Within European politics, a distinction is currently being made at the elite level between internal and external immigration, with individuals from EU countries being given special rights and privileges when they migrate within the EU. This paper addresses the question of whether individual EU citizens also view the two types of immigrants differently and what structures their beliefs regarding these two sources of migration. The findings indicat…

Turkey's Eventual Membership of the EU
A military coup and disarray in the government after the military returned power to the civilian government delayed the signing. 3 This was a time when Turkish-EC relations were particularly strained and when the EC was still in the process of adapting
