  • Who Should Rule for Cosmopolitans? Linking Cosmopolitan Orientations and Governance Preferences

    Open Access•Franziska Maier•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2026

In an era of globalization, much research has explored what those disadvantaged by globalization want from future democracy, while less is known about the preferences of those who benefit from and support globalization, namely, cosmopolitans. This article investigates the governance preferences of German cosmopolitans using original survey data. It introduces cosmopolitanism as a multidimensional concept and links these dimensions to support for …

  • Migration discourses from the radical right: Mapping and testing potential for political mobilization

    Open Access•Francesco Veri, Franziska Maier•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 55

Radical right‐wing groups are often linked to conspiratorial beliefs that can fuel political extremism but understanding how these beliefs translate into real‐world action remains a challenge, as these communities tend to operate in insular networks. This study examines how migration‐related narratives shape political behaviour among Italy’s radical right. Using Facebook’s advertising system, we recruited supporters of these movements for an expe…

  • Reflecting on the boundaries of the demos: A virtual deliberative experiment with German citizens

    Open Access•Franziska Maier, André Bächtiger•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 65

This article combines the fields of deliberative theory and citizenship studies. Drawing from a deliberative experiment on foreigner political rights with almost 300 German citizens, we find that a short virtual deliberative treatment produced a clarification effect, whereby especially those with already negative views increased their scepticism. Participants in our deliberative treatment displayed higher levels of argument repertoire and integra…

  • Performance evaluation of automated white matter hyperintensity segmentation algorithms in a multicenter cohort on cognitive impairment and dementia

    Open Access•Malo Gaubert, Andrea Dell’Orco et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

To conclude, the deep learning algorithm, when retrained, performed well in the multicenter context. Nevertheless, the performance was close to traditional methods. We provide methodological recommendations for future studies using automated WMH segmentation to quantify and assess WMH along the continuum of cognitive impairment and AD dementia

  • Citizenship from below: Exploring subjective perspectives on German citizenship

    Open Access•Franziska Maier•ARTICLE•Political Research Exchange•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Citizenship is a contested and multifaceted concept. This article introduces a research design to explore individual perspectives on citizenship in Germany. Its emphasis is on capturing broad perspectives on citizenship in a wide array of variations and terms. To achieve this, the article proceeds in two steps: First, a concourse on citizenship is constructed. To populate the concourse, I draw on citizenship theory and the German-speaking Twitter…
