Deliberative Governance for Sustainable Development
Deliberative Governance for Sustainable Development argues that governance has become the core problem of sustainable development and identifies deliberative democracy and governance as a path forward for Western societies. In this book the author puts forward three messages. Firstly, while sustainable development theoretically is a common good of all people, it is in practice constantly associated with a multitude of smaller and larger conflicts…

Party Government and the Political Control of Public Policy
In view of an ongoing debate on the relevance of political parties in public policy formation, this article discusses capacities and limits of party control over public policy in advanced capitalist states. Due to a strong political–economic interdependence, parties, like any other relevant public or private actor, have only severely limited capacities to influence public policy formation. This, however, does not imply that parties do not matter.…
Political‐Economic Interdependence and the Management of Economic Crisis
This article takes up some crucial problems raised in the contributions to this issue and discusses them theoretically in order to show some avenues for further research. The article reconsiders the impact of a high political‐economic interdependence on policy‐making and suggests some new questions for public policy analysis. More specifically, the importance of structural arrangements and of the complex relationship between structural arrangemen…
Consociational Democracy in Switzerland
Consociational democracy is usually explained in terms of the accommodation of conflicts resulting from cultural segmentation. This explanation hardly applies to modern Switzerland. This article presents an alternative explanation which focuses on conditions and strategies of majority formation. It is argued that direct democracy combined with a high level of socio‐economic and political differentiation makes a consociational pattern of decision‐…
Economic Crisis and Political Management
The management of political–economic interdependence is rather neglected in political theory as well as in political research. We propose a tentative framework of analysis concentrating on the processes of interaction between ‘politics’ and ‘economics’. Three levels of interaction are introduced and discussed in relation to current literature and to the contributions to this ‘special issue’. In particular, attention is paid to the potential role …
The Vanishing of Spontaneity
Cognitive Structure, Uncertainty, and the Rationality of Political Action
This article proposes a social‐psychological modification to the economic theory of politics, in particular to the theory of Anthony Downs. Its focal point is the relationship between political behavior and uncertainty. The social‐psychological modification permits a more systematic examination of the individual processing of information and its consequences for individual and collective behavior, and is not concerned with the entire field of app…
