Surveying national elites in the Federal Republic of Germany
Studies of national elites are concerned with the most powerful persons in a society, i.e. persons with considerable influence on collective decisions of central importance. This preliminary definition of national elites will be elaborated in a subsequent paragraph: before doing this, however, an overview of the theoretical approaches of elite research, as well as a short description of the research strategy used in the West German elite study of…
The global development of value orientations, political support and democracy since the 1990s
This article analyzes the global development of democracy since the 1990s. The theoretical introduction is followed by a descriptive analysis of several indices of political support based on survey results for 89 countries that participated at least twice in the World Values Survey (WVS) or the European Values Study (EVS). The analysis focuses on emancipative value orientations measured by Welzel's Choice Index and several indicators of political…
Comparing regime types – ‘most similar’ cases in East Asia
The People's Republic of China (PRC), the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Republic of Singapore represent different types of political regimes and provide a fascinating contrast concerning their performance with regard to the global conflict between liberal democracies and autocracies. This paper examines briefly their common historical backgrounds and provides a detailed analysis of common ‘Asia…

Seymour Martin Lipset: Modernizzazione, Struttura Sociale E Cultura Politica Come Fattori Dello Sviluppo Democratico

Elite integration in stable democracies: A Reconsideration
Efforts to reconceptualize elite structure and functioning in stable democracies, together with data from surveys of elite interaction networks in three democratic societies, suggest that the conventional power elite, ruling class and pluralist perspectives are only partly accurate and that fusing them in a more realistic model makes much sense. Using data from comparable surveys of national elites in the US, Australia and West Germany, we argue …
Positional power and political influence in the Federal Republic of Germany
Methods of elite identification measure different aspects of power in societies. The relationship between the positional and the decisional methods was studied empirically, using data from a 1981 West German elite survey. In this survey, respondents determined through the positional method were asked to name their interaction partners for (political) issues in which they were actively involved. The results show that incumbency of an elite positio…
