  • Critique and Catharsis

    Jonathan Peterson•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian…•2023

The popularization of Madhva’s realist Vedānta was accompanied by forceful critiques of its alleged enemies. Although the movement’s challenges to other Vedāntas has been well studied, its sustained engagement with Jainism has not. The anti-Jain writings of Madhva’s followers offer an important but neglected perspective on the early history of Mādhva Vedānta and its rise to power. Open Access•Jonathan R Peterson, Jonathan Peterson•ARTICLE•POLITICS AND RELIGION JOURNAL•2020

Political tolerance –– the willingness to afford basic civil rights to individuals or groups that one finds disagreeable –– is fundamental to liberal democracy. For several decades, political scientists believed that widespread religious adherence in the United States threatened political tolerance. Recent research casts doubt on the direct relationship between religiosity and political tolerance. However, this research is based on decades-old…

  • Social justice and the distribution of republican freedom

    Open Access•Jonathan Peterson•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 5

A republican theory of social justice specifies how republican freedom should be distributed. The goal of this paper is to assess the plausibility of two recently proposed principles of republican social justice: an aggregative maximizing principle defended by Philip Pettit in Republicanism and a sufficiency principle of republican social justice offered by Pettit in On the People’s Terms. The maximizing principle must be rejected because it perm…

Despite the Tārīkh-i Firishteh ’s continued importance for scholarship on early-modern South Asia, little attention has been paid to analyzing the text’s introduction, where its author, Muḥammad Qāsim Astarābādī (Firishteh), articulates a conception of historical time in part by critiquing the Mahabharata . Existing scholarship on the Introduction has invoked the conceptual framework of ‘encounters’ between Persianate and Sanskritic cultural sphe…

Delivered by every president since Eisenhower (and annually since 1961), the presidents' remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast represent the most succinct presidential expressions of religion in the United States over the past seven decades.
