  • Human consciousness and prosthetic temporality: On the way to new technological humanities

    Open Access•Youngmin Kim•ARTICLE•New Techno Humanities•2022

In Greek myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus, the two figures of promêtheia and êpimêtheia represent the “temporalization” of “advance” and “withdrawal” and reveal a double movement in human temporality: the forward movement of protective prostheticity, and the backward movement of reflective consciousness. The issue of memory and prostheticity in the originary knowledge in the myth of Prometheus and Epimetheus reminds us of what David Chalmers cal…

Youngmin Kim•BOOK•A history of Chinese political…•2018

China's rapid rise as a regional and global power is one of the most important political developments of the twenty-first century. • Cultural Translation and World Literature in Korea

    Youngmin Kim•ARTICLE•Comparative Literature Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The aesthetics and the ethics of cultural translation create the proper distancing as well as the free linguistic displacement based upon mutual respect and equivalence in every aspect. T. S. Eliot's fragments in the last section of The Waste Land, entitled “What the Thunder Said,” demonstrates such a case of cultural translation. The purpose of this case of cultural translation has been to provide a rationale for the context of the present Korea…

  • The politics of historical vision: Use of the past in the Analects

    Open Access•Youngmin Kim, Young‐min Kim•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper is about how the historical vision of Confucius was constructed in the Analects of Confucius. This analysis concentrates on its particular aspects like the notion of Zhou (1046–256 BCE) – the historical dynasty from which Confucius takes much of his guidance on culture, virtue, and refinement. The first part of this paper is to open up a space for a multidimensional and conceptually rich approach to what we might call Confucius’ ‘visio…

This essay examines the Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate and its shifting interpretations—those of Zhu Xi (1130–1200) and Wang Tingxiang (1474–1544) in particular—and by doing so explores the significance of ''cosmogony'' in the Confucian tradition and its significance for the change of political philosophy from the Song dynasty through the Ming. First, through a close reading of Zhu Xi's commentaries on the Diagram, it is argued that they should …

    Youngmin Kim, Young‐min Kim•ARTICLE•Ming Studies•2000•References: 4

By the early-sixteenth century in China, Neo-Confucian learning found itself in the midst of a major intellectual transformation, undergoing its most lively philosophical effervescence since its formative stage. For those interested in Chinese intellectual history and philosophy, the most important aspect of this transformation was the ascendancy of Wang Yangming (1472–1529). This focus on Wang Yangming is understandable, especially given the wid…
