  • Between meeting quotas and following the duty-bound heart

    Open Access•Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2024•References: 8

The provision of refuge to those fleeing persecution and danger is a complex matter that cannot be reduced to simply meeting admission quotas. While numerical targets for refugee admissions may seem like a straightforward way to ensure states are doing their fair share, an overemphasis on numbers risks obscuring the deeper moral issues at play. A truly robust approach to refugee protection requires that states act from the right kinds of reasons …

  • The populist challenge to European Union legitimacy

Open Access•Ilaria Cozzaglio, Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Philosophy•2023

The European Union's (EU's) legitimacy is currently under pressure from what is widely perceived as a populist challenge. Populists charge the EU as being undemocratic, unrepresentative, technocratic, and tied to the interests of the elite; as serving neither the will nor the interests of the people; and as simultaneously paying too little attention to the concerns of its member states while also being only timidly cosmopolitan. These claims have…

  • EU Citizenship for a European Republic of the Free and Equals or of States

    Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2022•References: 2

This article provides a critical comment on chapter five of Richard Bellamy’s A Republican Europe of States. The chapter focuses on EU citizenship as a status conferring to EU citizens certain entitlements to social and political rights when they reside in a member state other than their own. The chapter rejects the view that EU citizenship should entail equal access to social and political rights and provides an argument as to why EU citizenship…

  • EU Citizens’ Access to Welfare Rights

    Open Access•Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Res Publica. Revista de Historia…•2022•References: 8

Defenders of current restrictions on EU immigrants’ access to welfare rights in host member states often invoke a principle of reciprocity among member states to justify these policies. The argument is that membership of a system of social cooperation triggers duties of reciprocity characteristic of welfare rights. Newly arriving EU immigrants who look for work do not meet the relevant criteria of membership, the argument goes, because they have …

  • EU migration, out-of-work benefits and reciprocity

    Open Access•Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 35

This article examines whether restrictions on access to welfare rights for EU immigrants are justifiable on grounds of reciprocity. Recently political theorists have supported some robust restrictions on the basis of fairness. They argue that if EU immigrants do not immediately contribute sufficiently to the provision of basic collective goods in the host state, restrictions on their access to the welfare state are justified. I argue that these a…

  • Respect in Neo-Republicanism

    Open Access•Dimitrios Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Res Publica. Revista de Historia…•2019•References: 5

  • The Normative Value of Partisanship

    Open Access•Dimitrios Efthymiou, Dimitrios E Efthymiou•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2018•Cited by: 9•References: 32

Recent work on partisanship has highlighted the role of political parties in rendering democracy and justice widely accessible to citizens. In these recent works, a distinction is drawn between a contemporary conception of partisanship that focuses on fidelity to political parties and a classic conception that emphasises the importance of a civic ethos of active political engagement. I argue that these two conceptions of partisanship are not so d…
