  • Private Borders, Hidden Territories

    Open Access•Anna Jurkevics•CHAPTER•Lawless Zones, Rightless Subjects•2025

The premise of this volume is that borders are shifting, and that as borders shift, rights and democratic legitimacy ought to shift with them. For good reasons, the focus of this discussion is on sovereign states and their borders. However, sovereign borders do not exhaust the types of boundaries that shape and circumscribe human freedom. In this chapter, the focus is on the private geographies that shape our lives. These private geographies – an…

  • Lawless Zones, Rightless Subjects

Open Access•Hiroshi Motomura, Elizabeth F Cohen et al.•BOOK•Lawless Zones, Rightless Subjects•2025

Responding to ever-increasing pressures of migration, states, supranational, and subnational actors deploy complex moves and maneuvers to reconfigure borders, rights, and territory, giving rise to a changing legal cartography of international relations and international law. The purpose of this volume is to study this new reconfiguration of rights, territoriality, and jurisdiction at the empirical and normative levels and to examine its implicati…

  • Land Grabbing and the Perplexities of Territorial Sovereignty

    Open Access•Anna Jurkevics•ARTICLE•Political Theory•2022•Cited by: 8

The recent phenomenon of land grabbing—that is, the large-scale acquisition of private land rights by foreign investors—is an effect of increasing global demand for farmland, resources, and development opportunities. In 2008–2010 alone, land grabs covered approximately 56 million hectares of land, dispossessing and displacing inhabitants. This article proposes a philosophical framework for evaluating land grabbing as a practice of territorial ali…

  • Hannah Arendt Encounters Friedrich von Gentz

    Open Access•Anna Jurkevics•ARTICLE•Modern Intellectual History•2021•References: 3

This article contextualizes Hannah Arendt's complex and sometimes contradictory views on the Prussian statesman and balance-of-power theorist Friedrich von Gentz. A narration of Arendt's encounter with Gentz, to whom she devoted considerable space in her biography of Rahel Varnhagen and about whom she wrote two additional early essays, can illuminate the elusive contours of her international political thought as they developed from her early care…

  • Crises in Territorial Sovereignty

    Open Access•Anna Stilz, Anna Jurkevics•ARTICLE•Political Theory•2021

  • Democracy in contested territory

    Anna Jurkevics•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The proliferation of law-making beyond the nation-state has produced a landscape of thoroughgoing ‘global legal pluralism’ (GLP), in which legal regimes overlap in the same social field. Individuals find themselves under the rule of multiple and conflicting regimes, some of which have no ties of accountability to democratic constituencies. GLP thus rouses a perplexing picture of globalization as it untethers law-makers from jurisdictions, and gov…

  • Hannah Arendt reads Carl Schmitt’s The Nomos of the Earth

    Open Access•Anna Jurkevics•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2017•Cited by: 18•References: 37

Many studies have deduced subterranean dialogues between Hannah Arendt and Carl Schmitt from indirect evidence. This article uses new evidence from marginalia in Arendt’s copy of Nomos of the Earth and finds that she formed, but never published, an incisive critique of Schmitt’s geopolitics. Through an analysis of Arendt’s comments on the topics of soil, conquest, and contract, I show that Arendt deemed Schmitt’s theory to be imperialist and in c…
