Statism, urbanism, and the city
This paper contributes to urban political theory by drawing on Foucault’s concept of a ‘micro-physics of power’ and his genealogy of political rationality. Conceptually, it develops the notion of spatio-temporalization to reflect on the power of space and time; and genealogically, it examines the relationship between modern state formation and urbanization. Overall, the paper argues that the modern city emerges from a dialectical interplay of sta…
Where to when going local? Notes on the research agenda for “local political theory
In a recent programmatic contribution to this journal, Marta Wojciechowska and James Hickson have urged (normative) political theorists to systematically reflect on the local dimension of politics. Assuming that local phenomena are not simply a miniature of larger entities or forces, they emphasize the significance of examining the local to develop more nuanced accounts of the intricacies of the political world. This commentary addresses this imp…
Introduction
Time is among the most fundamental categories of political and, specifically, democratic life. While time in the sociopolitical world leaves traces in many (subtle) ways, we do not find it among the guiding concepts of democratic theory. This Special Issue, therefore, understands itself as part of a project that traces the centrality of time and temporality in democratic theory and practice. Our goal is to move toward an in-depth discussion of ti…
Vertrauen, Empathie und Emotionalität. Regieren als Inszenierung ›leidvoller Erfahrungen‹
In representative democracies, trust between the governing and the governed is of central importance to bridge the gap that emerges between electoral events. Accordingly, political performances are adjusted to presenting political actors not only as competent, but more fundamentally as trustworthy. Starting off from a narratological perspective, in this contribution I will reflect on the relevance of empathy and emotions for such political perfor…
Riskante Ausnahmen.
From time to time
The flourishing debate on the relationship between acceleration and governing is dominated by a view which identifies the increasing pace of the world as an exogenous reality of political decision-making. At the same time, interpretive perspectives have highlighted that governing is not only confronted with but actively involved in the construction of time. This paper argues that these two largely disconnected debates actually deal with two sides…
Reclaiming constructivism
The ‘Social Construction Framework’ which addresses the relationship between policy design and the construction of target groups is one of the central approaches within the field of policy theories. Yet, despite its name, the approach builds on several naturalist premises, and its analytical components are informed by principles rooted in positivist methodologies. Against this background, this article conducts a thorough critique of the framework…
EU critique beyond Euroscepticism and progressive stories
Critical stances towards the EU have long been marginalized. In the political realm, they have been, and still frequently are, depicted as the business of "Eurosceptics" who are fundamentally questioning an established normative consensus. In the academic realm, integration theory somewhat similarly builds on "stories of progress" which construct a simplistic and largely uncritical history of European integration. In this introduction to the spec…

Caught in the Middle? Welfare State Legitimisation and Problematisation in German and Swedish Middle-class Discourse
Variationen des Städtischen – Variationen lokaler Politik
Interrogating the city
There is a long tradition of debate about the crisis of cities or the crisis of local government in public, political and scholarly circles. The diagnosis of ‘the urban crisis’ often implies a homogeneous phenomenon with each city facing similar and unambiguous problems. However, we know little about local practices in constructing a city’s crisis. Taking discourse analysis as a starting point, we propose an interpretive and comparative framework…

The ‘distinctiveness of cities’ and distinctions in cities
It is in cities where people are most strongly confronted with diversity in an ‘age of migration’. However, comparisons of local integration contexts usually take ethnic boundaries as given or assume that they are constituted by the nation state. Our analysis of local discourses challenges this methodological nationalism. Departing from the ‘distinctiveness of cities’ approach, we scrutinise how Frankfurt, Dortmund, Birmingham and Glasgow differ …
Middle class and welfare state – discursive relations
Within current public, political and academic debates, ‘the middle class’ functions as a major point of reference for assessing societal developments, welfare arrangements and even the society as a whole. However, by identifying the middle class with quantitative indicators and methods stemming from social structural analysis, it is largely neglected that class structures are social artifacts. By contrast, in this forum contribution, we want to p…
Urban Problem Discourses
Despite the insistence in interpretive policy analysis that the discursive construction of problems must be understood in terms of their historical and spatial context, it remains an open question how cities provide such a context. We argue that cities as a distinct form of sociation enable certain (discursive) actions, while restricting others. Taking both the interest of interpretive policy analysis in the social construction of political reali…
Europeanisation as Discursive Process
Constructivist approaches to European integration maintain that the meaning of 'the EU' is a variable artefact contingent upon context-specific social practices. However, in Europeanisation scholarship, this premise has not yet settled, with the EU typically being treated as an objective reality constituting either adaptational pressures or windows of opportunities for domestic politics. This applies also to the research on the Europeanisation of…
