  • Theorizing Leadership Credibility

Open Access•Mads Leth Jakobsen, Mads Leth Felsager Jakobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Public Management…•2022

There are important reasons to conceptualize leadership credibility and formulate explicit expectations about its causes. First, credibility can be an important precondition when leaders aim to increase performance in public organizations that face complex societal problems and volatile governance. Second, leadership credibility is often mentioned but seldom systematically studied in the public administration literature. Based on a conceptualizat…

  • Uncertainty, ideas, and institutional reform

Open Access•Mads Leth Jakobsen, Mads Leth Felsager Jakobsen•ARTICLE•Acta Politica•2016•References: 45

It has become broadly accepted that causal ideas affect institutional reforms. Now the key question is why such ideas matter. In the literature on ideas, uncertainty is presented as an important precondition for the impact of ideas. This article develops the argument that uncertainty makes causal ideas matter, because the ideas help decision makers manage uncertainty by linking problems to solutions. The more uncertainty about what is at stake an…

  • How Politics Shapes the Growth of Rules

Open Access•Mads Leth Jakobsen, Mads Leth Felsager Jakobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Governance•2015•Cited by: 32•References: 36

This article examines the impact of politics on governmental rule production. Traditionally, explanations of rule dynamics have focused on nonpolitical factors such as the self‐evolvement of rules, environmental factors, and decision maker attributes. This article develops a set of hypotheses about when, why, and how political factors shape changes in the stock of rules. Furthermore, we test these hypotheses on a unique, new data set based on all…

  • The Effects of New Public Management

Open Access•Mads Leth Jakobsen, Mads Leth Felsager Jakobsen•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Political Studies•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Activity-based reimbursement (ABR) is a key element in the New Public Management reform programme. In recent decades ABR has replaced or supplemented frame-based reimbursement (FRB) in the Scandinavian hospital sectors, and political decision makers have widely believed that ABR would improve efficiency. This article systematically describes and compares 12 studies and their results to determine whether research supports this belief. The article …

  • Untangling the impact of Europeanization and globalization on national utility liberalization

Mads Leth Jakobsen, Mads Leth Felsager Jakobsen•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 24

This article uses the liberalization of the Danish electricity and telecommunication sectors to examine the impact of globalization and Europeanization on institutional reforms like utility liberalizations. The reform processes in the two sectors constitute a puzzle with very similar circumstances but different processes. This makes it possible to the test a hypothesis common to key theories on the impact of Europeanization and globalization, nam…
