Defending patriarchal arrangements
Men are consistently more likely than women to vote for populist radical right (PRR) parties across Europe, yet standard explanations centred on socio-economic vulnerability and issue positions account for only a modest share of this gap. This article proposes a framework, grounded in feminist theories of patriarchy and political masculinities, distinguishing three domains of patriarchal normativity: public-sphere male authority, productive-spher…
Societal promises and perils of AI
Research on AI anxiety has often assumed that perceptions of AI's societal risks and benefits translate uniformly into emotional responses, regardless of social position. Drawing on survey data from 2023, we combine social stratification theory with the sociology of risk to conceptualize AI anxiety as a sociotropic concern filtered by structural position. We examine how individuals simultaneously perceive societal benefits and risks of AI, and ho…
Assessing public sphere influence on political attitudes across generations
We present a project investigating the impact of social media on ideological structuring of political attitudes in a generational perspective, with Italy (around the 2024 European Parliament elections) as a case study. We introduce an innovative mixed-methods, sequential, quantitative-driven, multi-stage design combining surveys, qualitative interviews, and social media data, which effectively integrates qualitative and quantitative components to…

We posit that social media use, GenAI familiarity, and the abilit…

The tension between democracy and populism
This study provides a first empirical test of Margaret Canovan's influential argument on the relationship between democracy and populism, which posits that populism emerges as a consequence of the unresolved conflict between the pragmatic and redemptive faces of democracy. Despite its impact on scholars of populism, the implications of her framework remain untested. Using data from the EVS/WVS Integrated Values Surveys, we test Canovan's claims a…
Voting, fast and slow
We document ballot order effects in the 2012 Parlamentarie, the online primary election held by the Italian Five-star Movement to select the candidate Members of Parliament in the 2013 Italian general elections. We show that candidates appearing towards the top of the screen systematically ranked higher in preferences. This effect holds controlling for candidates’ socio-demographic features. We also show that the number of competing candidates mo…
