  • Textual symbol of urban spatial differentiation: An empirical analysis on nomenclature of tea restaurants in Hong Kong

Open Access•Mingchun Hu, Man Hei Kao et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2026

Spatial differentiation has long been a focus of scholars and policymakers due to its significant implications in urban planning and public administration. Existing research has approached this theme through structural, functional, and symbolic strands, yet the use of cultural markers to empirically reflect contrast across functionally distinct zones remains less developed. Hong Kong, a city with diverse cultural composition and stark regional di…

  • Foreign faith and rising state: An examination of state-building dynamics in late 16th-century Japan

Open Access•H Wang, Minzhao Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2025•References: 41

How does a ruler implement state-building at the local level? This paper examines state-building in late 16th-century Japan by focusing on Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s land surveys, which were crucial for establishing a centralized regime. We argue that Hideyoshi strengthened control over the locality via land surveys as a strategic response to the perceived threats emanating from Catholic missionaries. Using various empirical strategies including spatia…

  • Initiative as Institution: How the Belt and Road Initiative Influences Chinese Firms’ Participation in Global Value Chains

Open Access•Jie Wu, Jiwei Wu et al.•ARTICLE•The Chinese Journal of…•2024

This article investigates how the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), proposed by China in 2013, influences the participation of Chinese firms in the global value chains (GVCs). More than just an economic strategy, BRI could serve as a substitute for inadequate contract enforcement in cross-border economic transactions between Chinese firms and their foreign counterparts. Using data from Chinese private companies listed from 2008 to 2016 and multipli…

  • The human cost of war: An experimental study of Taiwanese attitudes towards war casualties

    Open Access•Ronan Tse-Min Fu, Ronan Tse‐min Fu et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Management and Peace…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This paper investigates public attitudes toward types of war casualties. Through a survey experiment, we examine Taiwanese responses to hypothetical scenarios involving casualties among Taiwan's own military, the US military as allies, the Chinese military as enemy combatants, and mainland Chinese civilians. Our paper reveals three findings: first, there is a stronger aversion among Taiwanese citizens to their own military casualties compared wit…

  • Estimating and evaluating treatment effect heterogeneity: A causal forests approach

    Open Access•Li Zheng, Weiwen Yin•ARTICLE•Research & Politics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In this paper, we introduce the causal forests method (Athey et al., 2019) and illustrate how to apply it in social sciences to addressing treatment effect heterogeneity. Compared with existing parametric methods such as the multiplicative interaction model and traditional semi-/non-parametric estimation, causal forests are more flexible for complex data generating processes. Specifically, causal forests allow for nonparametric estimation and inf…

  • The effects of state coercion on voting outcome in protest movements: A Causal Forest Approach

Open Access•Weiwen Yin, Weidong Huo et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 18

In this research note, we examine how Hong Kong voters respond to police violence in the recent social movement. We use causal forests, a machine learning algorithm, to estimate the impact of tear gas usage specific to each constituency. Based on the 2019 District Council Election outcome, we find that there is heterogeneity in the effect of state coercion on the vote share of pro-democracy candidates, depending on many socioeconomic characterist…

  • Political centralization, career incentives, and local economic growth in Edo Japan

  • Domestic arbitral institutions and foreign direct investment

    Open Access•Weiwen Yin•ARTICLE•International Relations of the…•2020•References: 21

Existing literature focuses on how domestic and international institutions address investor–state disputes and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). However, contractual disputes between foreign and domestic firms are largely neglected. For foreign investors, dispute resolution mechanisms that can effectively resolve contractual disputes are very important as well. In this article, I examine the effect of institutions that conduct arbitrations…

  • Climate Shocks, Political Institutions, and Nomadic Invasions in Early Modern East Asia

    Open Access•Weiwen Yin•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 52

While a large literature argues negative climate shocks can trigger conflicts, recent findings suggest moderate climatic conditions lead to war. This article proposes a conditional theory by incorporating political institution as a moderating variable. I argue that, under the impact of negative climate shocks, centralized societies can mobilize more resources for war, compared to decentralized societies. Thus, the former is more likely to resort …

  • Rooted in Poverty: The Political Economy of Terrorism in Xinjiang

    Open Access•Weiwen Yin•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Political…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 22

It has been one of the most debated puzzles in the study of political economy of terrorism whether economic development can curb terrorism. In Xinjiang, a multi-ethnic region in West China, it is widely believed that higher income levels can decrease the likelihood of terrorism conducted by Uyghur separatists or Islamic extremists. However, the county-level data for the year of 2013 show that better economic performance may not work as is expecte…
