Introducing the new diplomatic visits with France dataset, 1950–2020
Scholars have long argued that France maintains a significant degree of influence in global politics but have lacked systematic data to empirically test their theories. We seek to fill this lacuna by introducing novel data on leader visits conducted with France. Our data span from 1950 to 2020 and include both visits from French leaders as well as leader visits to France, amounting to more than 2600 visits in total. Additionally, we provide data …
A spatiotemporal analysis of Nato member states' defense spending
Concerns over free riding in NATO are widespread. An intuitive approach to analyzing free riding is treating it as a systematic pattern of spatial interdependence between the allies: how does a NATO member's defense spending react to changes in other allies' military expenditures? While recent work has found statistically significant free riding (negative spatial interdependence in the outcomes), it suffers from important limitations. First, this…
EU Defence Policy
Existing insights into recent defence integration, including against the backdrop of Russia’s war, largely stem from EU governance studies. Although these studies might not explicitly delve into the EU’s politico-strategic role, when combined with the broader framework of International Relations (IR), they imply the EU’s effective progression, at least relatively, as a defence actor. However, a closer analysis of certain key developments and tran…
How Institutions Moderated the Pandemic's Economic Impact in EU Member States
We investigate how institutional quality affected the economic downturn in EU countries during the COVID‐19 pandemic (2020–21). Using quarterly panel data, we show that countries with a higher quality of governance and a higher score of economic freedom suffered markedly less. Importantly, institutions mattered more when the pandemic shock was larger. Thus, the pandemic highlights the asymmetric impact of seemingly symmetric exogenous shock on EU…
