Is compulsive Internet use (CIU) an antecedent to poor mental health, a consequence, or both? Study 1 used a longitudinal design to track the development of CIU and mental health in Grade 8 (N = 1030 males, 1038 females, Mage = 13.7), 9, 10, and 11. • Health locus of control beliefs and attitudes toward people with Aids

    Open Access•Patrick C L Heaven, Patrick Heaven et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•1992•References: 4

We report the relationships between health locus of control beliefs and attitudes toward people with AIDS. Respondents were 359 adult Australians (18 years to 75 years of age). Generally, negative attitudes were associated with the view that the respondents' own health status was affected by powerful others (e.g., doctors) and chance factors. Belief in the influence of powerful others, however, only appeared to be a significant factor in the atti…

    Open Access•A Furnham, Patrick C L Heaven et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

This study attempted to test Eysenck's hypothesis of ‘cross-voting’ which suggests that many middle-class people are conservative in their economic beliefs but liberal in their general social attitudes. 80 Australian and 51 British middle-class subjects completed two questionnaires and positioned themselves on a right-left wing political dimension. Despite various analyses no support was found, showing rather that conservative economic beliefs we…

  • Attitudes toward a South African Liberation Movement

    Open Access•Patrick C L Heaven, Patrick Heaven et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1986•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The present investigation sought to determine attitudes toward the African National Congress (A.N.C.) among groups of black and white South African university students, especially because the A.N.C. was outlawed in South Africa. Results indicate that, among the white Afrikaans speaking group, negative attitudes toward the A.N.C. were not associated with authoritarianism, conformity, or racial prejudice. By contrast, the English speaking group wit…
