  • Applying conflict resolution insights to the hyper‐polarized , society‐wide conflicts threatening liberal democracies

Open Access•Guy Burgess, Heidi Burgess et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict Resolution Quarterly•2022

Through this essay and its accompanying commentaries, we offer a focal point for a wide‐ranging dialogue about how those with conflict‐related expertise might do more to contribute to efforts to slow, and ultimately reverse, the hyper‐polarization spiral now threatening so many developed democracies. In addition to exploring ways for promoting the more widespread utilization of the conflict field's existing insights and practices, we consider str…

  • Mining Negotiation Theory for Planning Insights

Open Access•Deborah F Shmueli, Sanda Kaufman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2008•Cited by: 14•References: 3

The rational planning model based on the view of planners as expert decision makers is gradually being replaced by collaborative models that acknowledge the joint nature of planning decisions. This article addresses the benefits of recognizing that negotiation is the key vehicle for joint decision making and therefore lies at the heart of planning. It calls for applying negotiation theory and practice lessons to examine and improve the dynamics o…

  • Public Attitudes Toward Urban Infrastructure: The Northeast Ohio Experience

    Open Access•Sanda Kaufman, Kevin Snape•ARTICLE•Public Works Management & Policy•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Urban infrastructure is typically invisible to the public eye although it is resource- and labor-intensive, rendering services indispensable to daily life. Some facilities appear to provide individually consumable benefits at little individual cost. Therefore, it is usually difficult to rally public support behind changes in the level and nature of infrastructure investments. Consequently, infrastructure decisions tend to be reactive to crises an…

  • Implementing Change in Locally Unwanted Land Use: The Case of GSX

    Open Access•Sanda Kaufman, Janet L Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 1

To date, guidelines and strategies for the siting process, including planner intervention, have arisen from conflict surrounding locally unwanted land uses (LULUs). The task of changing an existing unwanted land use has not received equal attention, and this task poses special problems for parties involved in the decision-making process. The issues, the space of alternative solutions, and some consequences of limited planner involvement are illus…

  • Quantitative and Research Methods in Planning: Are Schools Teaching What Practitioners Practice

    Open Access•Sanda Kaufman, Robert Simons•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•1995•Cited by: 7•References: 9

This paper offers a framework for reexamining the set of skills and techniques included in the quantitative and research methods curricula of American graduate planning programs. These offerings, viewed as the supply of skills, are compared to the demand—skills and techniques used by U.S. planning practitioners. The analysis explores the match between supply, current demand, and skills and techniques practitioners claim they intend to use in the …

  • A Formal Framework for Mediator Mechanisms and Motivations

    Open Access•Sanda Kaufman, George T Duncan•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1992•Cited by: 15•References: 13

A mediator aids disputants in resolving their differences. A theoretical framework for mediator mechanisms extends the subjective expected utility perspective and permits formal examination of mediator attitudes toward the equity and efficiency of agreements. Two forms of impartiality in promoting gains to disputants are examined: active (jointly motivated to help both disputants) and responsive (more motivated to help one disputant at higher pay…
