Decolonizing praxis
Migrant students, families, and their communities in the receiving countries where they live in some instances are the set of people subjugated to the structures of “colonial rule” in globalized, 21st century forms. Immigrants have fewer rights than citizens. They often live, or survive, in the precarious parts of their host countries and the global economies, and their economic and social realities include many vulnerabilities. In the worst-case…
The Bachelet Effect on Gender-Equity Policies
From 2006 to 2010, Michelle Bachelet carried out her role as president with a high degree of success in many ways, to the point that she left office with an unprecedented 80 percent popularity rating among all Chileans. Among women, she was an important symbolic figure, and she was supportive of and quite successful at proposing and implementing policy to support liberal and more traditional forms of maternal women's rights. Rural policy is a transversal policy, linking a number of sectoral concerns and interests. This makes it an interesting study, both of changing policy networks under devoluti…

Does devolution make a difference? Legislative output and policy divergence in Scotland
Devolution provides large scope for Scotland to make its own policy. Primary legislation is one measure of this. Scottish legislation before devolution tended to replicate measures for the rest of the United Kingdom, with differences of style. Scottish legislation in the first four-year term of the Parliament shows a big increase in output. There is an autonomous sphere, in which Scotland has gone its own way without reference to the rest of the …
Scottish MEPs' Perceptions of Their Role and Function and The Potential Impact of Electoral Reform
As the momentum towards devolution in the UK gathered pace, debate focused primarily on the structures and processes required in order to devolve power to the constituent parts of the United Kingdom, and on the relationship between the institutions in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast. Consequently, there has been little debate concerning changes to the ways MEPs are selected and elected in 1998-1999, and the impact of this upon their funct…
