Political Ideology in the Arab World: Accommodation and Transformation
Arab nationalism and Islamism have been the two most potent ideological forces in the Arab region across the twentieth century. Over the last two decades, however, an accommodation of sorts has been developing between liberals, socialists and Islamists, to protest unpopular foreign and domestic policies, such as those aimed at cooperation with Israel or the war in Iraq. By examining the writings of Arab nationalist, socialist and Islamist intelle…
The secular bias in ideology studies and the case of Islamism
The conceptualization of ideology within a largely secularized Christian context has impeded understandings of both the ideological force and function of religion in non-Christian contexts in general (though arguably in modern Christian contexts as well) and the distinctiveness of the ideas that animate contemporary Islamism in particular. This article first critically examines the limitations of sharp demarcations such studies assert between ide…
Arab liberalisms: Translating civil society, prioritising democracy
This article examines some of the earliest engagements of Arab thinkers with the now global idea of civil society. It focuses on Arab liberal thinkers who encounter ‘civil society’ as something that must be interpreted in order to be understood and view ‘translation’ as part of that process of interpretation. I argue that the ‘transition phase’ of contestation amidst loosely formulated, partially translated understandings of ‘civil society’ both …
Jefferson’s Land Ethic: Environmental Ideas in Notes on the State of Virginia
I articulate what I refer to as Jefferson’s “land ethic,” drawing primarily from his Notes on the State of Virginia. In the first section, I discuss Jefferson’s conception of the intimate relationship between the natural and political constitution of America and his vindication of both. In the second section, I examine the centrality of the environment in Jefferson’s political vision for America: a landbasedrepublicanism. In the third section, I …
Piecemeal Reform in Plato's Laws
Karl Popper has called Plato a dangerous Utopian who offers an unworldly blueprint for society. I argue that, in making this criticism, Popper offers an incomplete reading of Plato's political thought, overlooking the more worldly and modest blueprint of the Laws. In addition, I show that a better understanding of the relationship between the Republic and the Laws–between Plato's philosophical ideal and politically best possible state–demonstrate…
