Clinical Factors Associated with Inappropriate Antibiotic Use in Children with Acute Bronchiolitis
Despite the very low prevalence of serious bacterial infections and lack of clinical benefit, most children hospitalized with acute bronchiolitis received antibiotic therapy. Inappropriate antibiotic use was primarily driven by fever and elevated C-reactive protein levels, which lacked sufficient diagnostic justification
Similarities and Differences between Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) and Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome
This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of COVID-19-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and Kawasaki disease shock syndrome (KDSS) and to compare the similarities and differences between the two diseases. The incidence of KDSS and MIS-C was also estimated. Medical records of patients diagnosed with MIS-C or KDSS at four hospitals from January 2013 to December 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-one …
Under-Recognized Macrophage Activation Syndrome in Refractory Kawasaki Disease
Recognition of macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) in patients with refractory Kawasaki disease (KD) can be challenging. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of MAS in patients with refractory KD and to compare the characteristics of refractory KD and MAS. Medical records of 468 patients diagnosed with KD from January 2010 to December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Of the 468 KD patients, 63 were enrolled in the study as a refracto…
The Hawthorne Studies Revisited
Many organization theorists have recognized the Hawthorne studies as path-breaking demonstrations of the influence of social and psychological factors in the workplace. We provide evidence that important implications of the Hawthorne studies can be applied to the federal workforce. Our analysis shows that social relations and participative management style have stronger influences than physical conditions on public employees’ perceived performanc…
Disorder, dictatorship and government effectiveness
Institutional design balances the costs and benefits of dictatorship and disorder. Democracy can be efficient if it improves the performance of government. Yet, sometimes authoritarian governments can be efficient if they reduce disorder. We show that democratisation has a non-linear effect on income-adjusted perceptions of government effectiveness. These findings present a new opportunity to revisit the study of government performance for resear…
Government Effectiveness in Comparative Perspective
In this paper we offer an approach for conceptualizing and measuring government effectiveness or performance in which the focus is on the whole government's effectiveness. We examine data that portray how countries compare in terms of perceived government effectiveness using the World Bank Governance Indicators dataset, which cover 212 countries from 1996 until 2006. We also offer and interpret a new measure of perceived government effectiveness …
