  • Public Leaderboard Feedback in Sampling Competition

Stanton Hudja, Brian Roberson et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

We investigate the role of performance feedback, in the form of a public leaderboard, in a sequential-sampling contest with costly observations. We show theoretically that for contests with a fixed ending date (i.e., finite horizon), providing public performance feedback may result in fewer expected observations and a lower expected value of the winning observation. We conduct a controlled laboratory experiment to test the theoretical predictions…

  • Is the 50-State Strategy Optimal

    Open Access•Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 40

In 2005, the Democratic National Committee adopted the 50-state strategy in lieu of the strategy of focusing solely on battleground states. The rationale given for this move is that campaign expenditures are durable outlays that impact both current and future campaigns. This article investigates the optimality of the 50-state strategy in a simple dynamic game of campaign resource allocation in which expenditures act as a form of investment. Neith…

  • Electoral Poaching and Party Identification

    Open Access•Dan Kovenock, Brian Roberson•ARTICLE•Journal of Theoretical Politics•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 23

This article studies electoral competition in a model of redistributive politics with deterministic voting and heterogeneous voter loyalties to political parties. We construct a natural measure of `party strength' based on the sizes and intensities of a party's loyal voter segments and demonstrate how party behavior varies with the two parties' strengths. In equilibrium, parties target or `poach' a strict subset of the opposition party's loyal vo…

  • The Shaping of the Current Islamic Reformation

    Brian Roberson•CHAPTER•Shaping the Current Islamic…•2004

It is an uncertain business understanding the impact of political Islam and salafism in today’s Middle East. It is particularly difficult to plug into the region and fully understand the dialogue or the discourse that is found there. This discourse will be peppered with referents, concepts, ‘code’ words that appear esoteric, backward, archaic and irrelevant to the issues and problems besetting the peoples in the region. This has contributed to th…
