    In contrast to Anglo‐American tradition, compulsory military service survives in Western Europe as a feature of the Western defence system. With growing scepticism about the use of nuclear deterrents, and with revived ideas about increasing the proportion of conventional weapons in NATO's defences, it is appropriate to review how and why conscription survives in Europe.
