Health and health management among motorcycle-based food delivery workers in South Korea
PURPOSE: This study aimed to qualitatively examine the daily lives of motorcycle-based food delivery workers, focusing on how they experience, perceive, and interpret their health-related issues. METHODS: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with nine MFDWs in South Korea between July and September 2024 to explore their perceptions of health. Psychometric Properties of the Korean Version of the Smoking Media Literacy Scale for Adolescents
Smoking media literacy has proven to be an effective competency for reducing adolescents' smoking. This study aimed to cross-culturally modify the smoking media literacy scale and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the revised Smoking Media Literacy Scale for Adolescents (K-SMLS). The translation of the K-SMLS was conducted according to the World Health Organization's guidelines. After the translation process, an onlin…
The Sequential Mediating Effects of Dietary Behavior and Perceived Stress on the Relationship between Subjective Socioeconomic Status and Multicultural Adolescent Health
Studies have examined the impact of social determinants of health on the health behaviors and health statuses of ethnic minority adolescents. This study examines the subjective health of this population by examining the direct effects of multicultural adolescents' subjective socioeconomic status (SES) and the sequential mediating effects of their dietary behaviors and perceived stress. We utilized secondary data of 500 middle school students from…
Using Intervention Mapping to Develop a Media Literacy-Based Smoking Prevention Program for Female Adolescents
Smoking prevalence among female adolescents in South Korea has increased gradually, despite a decreasing trend seen for male adolescents. Smoking scenes or cigarette advertisements in the media have influenced female adolescents' initiation into smoking. It is therefore crucial to develop a smoking prevention program to enhance female adolescents' smoking media literacy by implementing gender-specific approach. The purpose of this study is to des…
Experiences of the First Year Implementation of a Nationwide School-Based Smoking Prevention Program in Korea
Encouraged by the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Korea has implemented a nationwide School-based Smoking Prevention Program (SSPP) to reduce the prevalence of youth smoking. This qualitative study explored the school contexts of launching the SSPP in Seoul, Korea. Five focus groups were studied with 29 lead teachers in charge of the SSPP. Thematic analysis reveals three key findings. First, while infrastructure was insufficiently prepar…
Prioritizing Training Needs of School Health Staff
Competencies of school health staff (SHS) members, including school nurses, are crucial to improving child and adolescent health. In Vietnam, although SHS members are dispatched to schools, they have limited training opportunities. This study identified SHS members’ training needs in a province of Vietnam. A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted with 204 SHS members. The performance and importance of SHS members’ competencies were measured…
The Devolution of Multiculturalism in South Korea
This paper examines South Korean media coverage of migrant workers from 1990 to 2015 and analyzes how multiculturalism is intertwined in discussions of migrant workers. I find that South Korea, once an avid supporter of multiculturalism, is slowly retreating from it, like other countries, but not in the same direction
Securitising, Economising and Humanising Immigration
Immigration poses a dilemma for host states. Embracing international migrants contributes to economic prosperity and enhances the national reputation as a guardian of human rights, while simultaneously triggering security concerns. How can a migrant-receiving state address this dilemma? Using the case of the Employment Permit System (EPS) enacted in South Korea in 2003, which was the first law to protect the basic rights of foreign workers, this …
Soft talk, hard realities
Cornelius et al., (2004) assert that the gap between immigration policy objectives and outcomes is growing. Their case studies around the globe indicate that states tend to use “tough” rhetoric in immigration control but mostly end up with “soft,” liberal policy practice. South Korea shows a similar gap, but in the opposite direction. In this paper, I explore this gap between “soft rhetoric” and “tough action” of the Korean government’s immigrati…
Past Activism, Party Pressure, and Ideology
Studies have found that participation in social movements has long-term consequences for individuals' personal life choices and political beliefs. An important but understudied subject in this literature is the impact of past activism on political behavior in an institutional context. The entry of past activists into Korea's National Assembly offers a unique opportunity to assess the continuing effects of movement participation in the context of …
Racism in the global era
Racism has taken on subtle forms that are hard to notice unless given careful attention. In the era of globalization, interpreting racism becomes more complicated in that globalization intensifies both racist and anti-racist reactions. This article examines how racism in the global age has evolved into a subtler form. Using both frame analysis and critical discourse analysis, I examine the Korean media’s discourse around migrants in the past two …
