  • On the Political Sociology of Intersectional Equality and Difference

Bruce Baum, Bruce J Baum•ARTICLE•Social Theory and Practice•2022

This article contends that Axel Honneth’s critical social theory provides a compelling general framework with which to map out the political sociology of social equality in a way that takes due account of class-based inequalities, social identity differences, and ecological challenges of contemporary globalized societies. Honneth joins an emphasis on equal respect for all—a core aspect of equality in modern democratic societies—with an account of…

This article examines tensions in the egalitarianism of J. S. Mill and R. H. Tawney alongside national education systems to develop a critical theory of democratic equality. • Millian Radical Democracy

    Open Access•Bruce Baum, Bruce J Baum•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 28

This paper returns to J. S. Mill to draw out democratic conceptions of education and equality that challenge still-current conceptions of intractable human inequalities. Mill acknowledges that individuals differ in abilities. Nonetheless, he develops a broad conception of ‘education for freedom’ and insists that only ‘wretched social arrangements’ prevent virtually all people from exercising capacities for self-government in citizenship, marriage…

  • J. S. Mill on Freedom and Power

    Bruce Baum, Bruce J Baum•ARTICLE•Polity•1998•Cited by: 3

John Stuart Mill is justly famous for his account of how oppressive social and political power limit individual freedom. Yet he also powerfully challenges the equating of freedom with an absence of external constraints and offers an important corrective to the view that freedom and power are inversely related. Mill's conception of freedom emphasizes the necessity of autonomy, a variety of choices and possibilities, and means and opportunities for…

  • The Dental Curriculum

    Open Access•Bruce J Baum•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•1996

Dental education is at a critical juncture. The success of water fluoridation has reduced the caries burden of Americans and, consequently, has raised questions about the disproportionate technical emphasis on treating the sequelae of caries in US dental schools. Additionally, several powerful external factors-such as changing demographics, advances in biological science, fundamental changes in our health care delivery system, and a modest US eco…

  • Decreased odontometric sex difference in individuals with dental agenesis

    Open Access•Bruce J Baum, Michael Cohen•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973•References: 7

Partial Dental Agenesis has been shown related to decreased mesiodistal tooth size. The sexual difference in permanent tooth size of 104 normal individuals with congenital absence of one or more secondary teeth has been studied. Males are observed to have more mesiodistal size reduction than females. In only two of 14 tooth types examined was a statistical sex difference in mesiodistal size shown. It is of interest that each of these was in the c…

Tooth dimensions in 104 males and females with agenesis of one or more permanent teeth, other than third molars, have been examined. The amounts of size reduction from normal in mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth diameters appear to be independent. Also some apparent differences from normal tooth size variability were noted. Interestingly, first molars and canines, both considered to be stable components of the dentition, showed significant varia…
